Peek email device: now with text messaging and image viewing capabilities 18 November 2008 at 8:34 pm by admin

It’s barely been two days since we heard that “Dan” at Peek had opened a suggestion box for would-be customers to recommend “minor” tweaks for their email only handheld, so we assume today’s news is unrelated. Regardless, there was a pretty decent upgrade to the device last night, adding the ability to view image attachments, as well as text messaging capabilities. Texting works through an SMS email gateway, with users entering numbers in the “To:” field, but we’re not going to start nitpicking about technicalities. Seriously though, if they add a way to make calls to this thing, we’re totally sold.

+ pureSilicon’s rugged Renegade SSD touts hardware-based encryption By admin 29 October 2008 at 1:21 am and have No Comments

Filed under:

pureSilicon isn’t offering up the first rugged SSD or anything, but its Renegade line is still tough enough to be compliant with MIL-STD-810F (and this guy’s) standards. Hailed as the first solid state drive to integrate hardware-based encryption approved by the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS), the device boasts up to 128GB of capacity, a dedicated on-board cryptographic processor, hard-anodized unibody enclosure and the ability to withstand most anything that you could put it through (save for a blender). Select customers have already received samples, but if you’re dumbstruck by such a notion, you’ll have to wait with the rest of the citizenry and nab yours in Q1 2009.

+ Amex Digital does what Steve won’t, intros portable Blu-ray burner for Macs By admin 16 October 2008 at 7:10 pm and have No Comments

A “bag of hurt,” huh Steve? How do you like these Apples? Amex Digital has stepped in to give prospective MacBook / MacBook Pro owners (and anyone with a fresh USB-equipped Mac, really) the ability to watch and burn Blu-ray Discs… so long as they’re cool with hauling around an external unit. The glossy black / white drive (coincidence?) is pretty much a Blu flavor of the portable Super Multi Drive it churned out in July. It’ll burn BD-RE / -R (single-layer) discs at 2x, while dual-layer versions will only toast at 1x; as for blank DVDs, they’ll get done at a rate of 4x to 8x depending on flavor. Not too painful at just $289, wouldn’t you agree, Mr. Jobs?

[Thanks, A1]

+ Mint Out of Beta, Loaded with New Features [Personal Finance] By admin 14 October 2008 at 11:30 am and have No Comments

Personal finance webapp Mint.com has graduated from beta development and now offers a variety of new features. Prior to leaving beta only a small number of test users had access to the investment tracking features. Now all users are able to track investment vehicles such as IRA, 401k, and 529 accounts. The 401k section has been enhanced and now includes support for tracking past and present 401k accounts. The most prominent change is the one users requested the most: the ability to define their own transaction categories instead of relying on the predefined categories supplied by Mint. For more information about Mint, check out our screenshot tour from earlier this year.

+ FCC Says Free Wireless Plans Won’t Screw Up T-Mobile’s 3G [Free Wireless] By admin 13 October 2008 at 9:52 pm and have No Comments

Trying to add a silver lining to your undoubtedly dismal economic future, the FCC has struck down T-Mobile’s complaints that the agency’s scheme to offer free wireless to lower-income peoples will interfere with established 3G networks. In an engineering report, the agency claimed that there would be no “significant risk of harmful interference.”

That’s a good thing should this plan, which would offer downstream speeds of 768kbps for free to half the U.S. within the first four years, and 95% in the next six, actually come to fruition. T-Mobile and its ilk have threatened to sue if the FCC’s action impairs their ability to use the spectrums they purchased in any way.

Will it ever be though? I mean, who does the FCC think is going to buy something with this many expensive restrictions on it in the first place? [Mobile Tech Today]

+ How to Tie a Bowline Knot [Video Demonstration] By admin 11 October 2008 at 10:00 am and have No Comments

The one DIY skill most of you don’t have (according to last weekend’s poll) is the ability to tie a bowline (knot, that is). Unless you’re a sailor or a Girl or Boy Scout, you’ve probably never heard of a bowline (pronounced “boh-lin”). But this super-useful knot creates a loop that’s strong enough to put around someone’s waist and pull them out of the water, or hold down heavy objects, and it’s very easily undone. Hit the play button above to learn how to tie a bowline using an easy-to-remember bunny metaphor. Just recently I hung a hammock using a bowline. Any knot nerds out there put the bowline to good use in regular everyday life? Any other knots you know and love? ‘Fess up in the comments.

+ Two bulldogs for EVERYONE [Recap] By admin 10 October 2008 at 7:00 pm and have No Comments

Yeah, I know: The world is ending. You can flip through Sequoia Capital’s 56-slide preso on it. Still, in the middle of what he dubbed the Startup Depression, Mahalo chatterbox-in-chief Jason Calacanis has added more staff-generated content. What Calacanis knows that Sequoia won’t tell you: Up or down, a lot has to do with your ability to sell a story. Too bad your boss the wannabe general won’t have to sell you on that “painful but necessary adjustments” story in the works. Keep those lame layoff memos coming.

+ The New Xbox Experience Cometh on November 19 [Nxe] By admin 08 October 2008 at 10:47 pm and have No Comments

Microsoft’s New Xbox Experience, the upcoming dashboard system that’ll let you create avatars and social network, now has a set date for its worldwide launch—November 19. The guys from Redmond showed a completed version of the NXE at the Tokyo Game Show, and included a little Xbox-avatar Bill Gates announcing that he’s “a PC.” Cute.

In about six weeks, you’ll get the ability to create your Xbox mini-you, as well as get access to themes and a new games channel that lets you browse visually and includes new games details pages. Also up, a Spotlight channel that’ll focus on popular and new content—games, movies, demos etc. [Kotaku]
