Samsung’s P3 unboxed and caught on video 01 December 2008 at 11:52 am by admin

Word on the street has it that the Samsung P3 will be getting its official launch at CES in January, and to whet your appetite we’ve got a video unboxing for you courtesy of those crazy kids at Generation MP3. Apparently the same form factor as the venerable P2 (but in an all aluminum enclosure), the PMP sports haptic touch, WQVGA 3-inch (480 x 272) display, Bluetooth, microphone, speaker, FM tuner, plays all the expected media formats, and will be available in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB. Also in the video, we get a pretty extensive look at those widgets everyone’s been talking about. But don’t take it from us — you can see for yourself after the break.

+ The Simpsons mocks (m)Apple By admin 01 December 2008 at 4:00 am and have No Comments

Few have been spared the satire of Matt Groening’s long running animated sitcom. Last night, The Simpsons took on Apple, or uh, Mapple for a full 6 minutes of lampoonery — a pretty harsh ride at a two-joke per minute pace. It all starts when the Springfield mall gets its very own Mapple store, “it’s so sterile,” gasps Lisa upon entering. Perhaps the best exchange comes from Bart’s dubbing of a Steve Mobs’ product announcement in front of a crowd of gaping nerds, “You think you’re cool because you buy a $500 phone with a picture of a fruit on it. Well guess what? They cost 8 bucks to make and I pee on every one!” A Mapple store employee then angrily responds, “Who dares question the boss we fired 10 years ago and then brought back!” Yuk yuk. Videos after the break for as long as it takes for the copyrighters to wake up.

[Thanks, holycow]

+ BMW Product Navigator: create your next Bimmer on a Surface By admin 30 November 2008 at 11:49 pm and have No Comments

It hasn’t even been two months since Microsoft loosed its Surface SDK, and already we’re seeing new and improved (or is it just one or the other?) uses of the giant multitouch display. In a presumed attempt to keep savvy shoppers off of those message boards and in the dealership, BMW has developed a promotional video showcasing the so-called Product Navigator. Said device reminds us an awful lot of that fictional computer seen the recent “Twins” Volkswagen commercial, though it actually enables prospective customers to develop their next whip rather than taking their John Hancock and doing the hard work itself. Personally, we’d rather spend our time on the track in Spartanburg deciding which model suits us best, but to each his / her own, we guess. Vid’s after the break.

+ Hidden TV out features discovered in iPhone 2.2 SDK By admin 27 November 2008 at 3:05 pm and have No Comments

So, get a load of this. While tinkering within the iPhone 2.2 SDK, ArsTechnica discovered a neat little tidbit that could lead to some pretty extensible applications. In essence, the MPTVOutWindow class enables your iPhone to beam out video to a connected TV rather than the built-in screen. Of course, dock-connecting iPods / iPhones have been sending out videos for ages now, but this could actually enable applications to be used on the big screen. Sadly, the current code won’t allow screen interaction while the TV out function is active, but the accelerometer is still a go. Check out a short demonstration clip after the break, and feel free to let your imagination run wild after peeking the read link.

+ Chief Cook robot plays Pong, is just the kind of humanoid we want to hang with By admin 24 November 2008 at 1:23 pm and have No Comments

The last time we saw Chief Cook, a learn-by-doing robot, he was cooking a ham and cheese omelet. Well, he’s back, sitting on the floor playing Pong with his buddy, to whom he repeatedly says “You are a loser.” And we thought our friends were mean! Check out Chief in action after the break.

MechRC is here to dance, not enslave

Say what you want about robots being our future overlords and all that, but we think they’re really just here to boogie. I mean, if all you wanted to do was get your groove on but some engineer kept programming you to scare prisoners or little children, you might go looking for a little payback too, right? Thankfully there’s MechRC, a 17-servo kit newly available in the Americas that, despite his menacing visage, should do wonders to soothe human-robot relations through a vast array of funky moves. Thanks to what looks to be some easy to use (though sadly not Mac compatible) software, would-be robo-choreographers of nearly any age should be able to sharpen their teeth here, and while $599 isn’t exactly impulse-buy territory, that’s considerably cheaper than many of the other robot kits we’ve covered before — and some of them can’t even shake their tail feather! MechRC sure can, just check out the “Evolution of Dance” homage after the break. Judson Laipply, you just got served!

+ AMD overclocks the snot out of Phenom II processors By admin 21 November 2008 at 10:47 am and have No Comments

AMD overclocks the snot out of Phoenom II processors

No, you’re not looking at some high-precision, multimeter-laden kegerator; the above is a picture from a recent AMD event in which things apparently got a little out of hand. The company started by talking up its upcoming Dragon platform (Phenom II X4, Radeon 4800 graphics, and 7-series chipset), took a few moments to discuss how its new 45nm chips will use 30-50 percent less power than their predecessors, and then threw all notions of sensibility out the window in an attempt to see just how fast the darned things could go. A Phenom II X4 managed 4GHz with air-cooling, 4.4GHz with a refrigerated setup, and finally a “stable” 5GHz on liquid nitrogen. That’s mighty fast, but will the chips be quick enough to tackle Intel’s mighty Core i7 when stripped of their fancy-pants cooling appendages? We’ll see when they ship early next year.

+ Creative gives up, introduces the Zen Moo By admin 21 November 2008 at 4:39 am and have No Comments

We’re seen plenty of cheap plastic MP3 land-fillers in our day. But those usually originate from deep-down in the fetid bowels of some no-name manufacturing house in southeast Asia, not the once illustrious Creative. The Zen Moo (yes, Moo) appears to be be a Zen Stone with extra bits of plastic and paint added to achieve Cow. Like the Stone, you get a small OLED, 2GB of memory, 20 hours of playback, and FM tuner to the delight of kids across China (where the Zen Moo was announced) — hey, it’s never too early to destroy a child’s hearing. Gift-wrapped product waifs holding the accompanying speaker accessory after the break.
