Let’s face it: this year’s recession-busting Black Friday sucked, featuring a few good deals but no single blockbuster worth getting up at 2:00 am to stand in the cold. Over the weekend we still maintained a bit of hope that Cyber Monday would bring something worth getting excited about, and while right now it looks like we’re set for another disappointingly bargain-free day full of nothing but work and turkey sandwiches, one deal did catch our eye. Amazon has a Nintendo DS up for just $99; that’s $30 less than you’ll find it elsewhere — if you can find it elsewhere. The catch is it’s the “Limited Edition Pink Ribbon” version, and pink and white is not exactly the perfect color scheme for those about to rock. However, a deftly-placed AC/DC sticker might let you feel the joy of supporting a good cause this holiday season ($5 goes to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation) while also avoiding any embarrassing taunting from thoughtless friends.

No matter how accustomed we should be by now, it’s always jarring to see one of the Nokia N-series phones drop at some outlandish unsubsidized price — if you think the $556 tag on this N85 is hefty, keep in mind that Amazon is claiming that’s already been steeply discounted from an atmospheric $1,200 “list price.” While the phone is available to “buy” right this second at Amazon.com, there’s a 3 to 5 week ship time quoted, so there’s no telling if this’ll be the first spot to nab the hotly-anticipated, N96-besting AMOLED handset in the States — though it might be the first to take your hard earned cash for such a purpose.

Oh sure, there’s bound to be some protrusion when shoving a retro console into a gaming handheld, but inelegant styling was a way of life for Sega back in the mid-90s. Modder Chris Koopa has achieved the impossible by stuffing an Atari 2600 (or the important parts, anyway) along with 40 games into a hacked up Game Gear and enabling it to operate for nearly a full workday with just five AA batteries. And yeah, there’s totally a 2600 cartridge slot to allow for playback of original titles. You know you’re oddly interested in seeing more, so tap the read link for a few shots from the rear / side.

Nabbing Canon’s little PowerShot SD770IS 10 megapixel shooter with optical image stabilization for $160 from Amazon is a decent deal, though not great. Like many of this year’s so called Black Friday deals, a little mouse-work will likely uncover the same prices elsewhere. But read Amazon’s fine print and you’ll see that you can add a free, 4GB class 4 SDHC card (something you’ll likely want to purchase anyway) to save another $11 or so on your purchase. What Amazon doesn’t tell you is that you can add any Kingston SDHC card for free. Right, including the $30 16GB SDHC card (ships after Chistmas) or $15 8GB class 6 card (ships before Christmas). Free shipping too and tax free — $159.94 is your final price. Just hit up the links below, add the products to your cart, and watch the savings roll in.

What started down under has followed the sun home, Apple’s Black Friday sale is now live at the US Apple store. At first glance the sale is consistent with years past and what we’ve already seen In Australia and elsewhere — so much for all the analyst expectations of a big blow out.

We’ve seen these Amazon “leaks” time and again. So while the December 7th date for the Vado HD might be an educated guess, the details including that $200 price tag certainly look real enough. The display still measures 2-inches, but the beefier 3.3 x 7.9 x 6.3-inch solid state camcorder now brings 8GB of storage for up to 2 hours of 720p MPEG-4 recordings — 8 hours at VGA quality. It also ships with an HDMI cable for instant playback to your like-equipped television. Otherwise, slot the cam into your PC’s (XP and Vista, only) USB port to instantly share your works to YouTube and others with the help of the cam’s built-in Vado Central Software. With this, the Kodak Zi6, and Flip Mino HD, there certainly won’t be any shortage of pocket HD cameras of suspect-tweener quality to choose from this holiday season.

You’re thinking about it. Your spouse is thinking about it. Your kids are thinking about it. And yes, your NXE Avatar is thinking about it, too. Black Friday is but hours away, and you still haven’t conjured up the courage to get up at 3:00AM and venture out to save a grand total of $14.97 (pre-tax). Never fear, as the world’s most spectacular e-tailer is here with a slew of deals to keep you firmly planted. Amazon’s going all out on the day after Thanksgiving, but it’s also giving early birds the opportunity to snag a few specials on the run-up to the big day. We won’t spoil anything here, but be sure and give the read link a look if you’re all about saving some dough and staying home.

While the Wiimote opened the door to motion-sensitive gaming, it’s obvious limitations even have Nintendo pushing the tech forward with add-ons like the MotionPlus — but a company called Sixense might have leapfrogged the field with a system called TrueMotion 3D. Rather than relying solely on an accelerometer, this controller uses a magnetic field to track both your hands’ positions in 3D space. With a refresh rate of ten milliseconds and accuracy up to a millimeter, and interest from developers including Activision and EA, this guy could someday relegate your Sixaxis to the back of your junk drawer — right next to your old Atari’s paddle controller. Not convinced? Scope the tell-all demo after the break.

So we heard from Amazon back in August
not to expect that rumored Kindle 2 anytime this year… but then there were those
leaked photos of the new device, so people kind of went back to expecting it again, but, apparently we should stop doing that now (again). According to unnamed sources talking to
TechCrunch, the Kindle 2, will arrive in a vaguely termed “early next quarter.” The source says the device has been ‘delayed’ by Bezos himself, that the leaked photos we saw a while back are the real thing, and that a student version of the reader, which will ironically have a larger screen and be better than the standard one, will hit in the first half of 2009 as planned (rumored). Hard-copy of
Wuthering Heights, your execution has been stayed another few months.
