Atari 2600 stuffed into Game Gear, Sega Nomad seen casting envious glances 30 November 2008 at 5:32 pm by admin

Oh sure, there’s bound to be some protrusion when shoving a retro console into a gaming handheld, but inelegant styling was a way of life for Sega back in the mid-90s. Modder Chris Koopa has achieved the impossible by stuffing an Atari 2600 (or the important parts, anyway) along with 40 games into a hacked up Game Gear and enabling it to operate for nearly a full workday with just five AA batteries. And yeah, there’s totally a 2600 cartridge slot to allow for playback of original titles. You know you’re oddly interested in seeing more, so tap the read link for a few shots from the rear / side.

+ The Stick Makes It Into Toy Hall of Fame By admin 07 November 2008 at 6:41 pm and have No Comments

About a month ago, Wired.com editor Leander Kahney crucified me when I wrote about a man killing a bear with a stick: A piece of wood is hardly considered a "gadget," he said, gently leaning his knee on my throat. But a stick was cool enough to make it into the National Toy Hall of Fame in New York on Thursday.

The stick, along with the baby doll and the skateboard, joined the Strong National Museum of Play’s lineup of classics, including Mr. Potato Head, the cardboard box and the Atari 2600 game system, according to a CNN story.

Well deserved. Sticks are awesome, dammit! Back when we were kids, a stick was whatever we wanted it to be: A light saber, a fishing rod, a pipe bomb. Long live the stick.

+ iPhone Breakout Knockoffs Being Nastygrammed By Atari [Breakout Clone] By admin 18 September 2008 at 7:20 pm and have No Comments

Programmers who made knockoffs of the Atari game Breakout are getting nasty letters from the game developer to remove their apps from the iPhone App Store. So far touchArcade says BreakClassic, BreakTouch 3D and Super Pong 2 have all been targeted, which is similar to the situation where the Tetris knockoff Tris was also pulled due to the Tetris company. On a similar note, the lightsaber app PhoneSaber was removed by request of Lucas Arts, and went back with new art assets and official help. We don’t think Atari will be so kind. + Peugeot Concept Cars of Tomorrow Have Propellers, Joysticks [Future Cars] By admin 13 September 2008 at 1:00 pm and have No Comments

If Gundam mated with Will Smith’s Audi in I, Robot, the offspring would resemble these futuristic concept cars from European brand Peugeot. The cars car-like vehicles were all entries in the 2008 Peugeot Design Contest. Designers were asked by organizers to create vehicles for that ambiguous but tantalizing “city of the future.” Areas of focus included environmental awareness, “social harmony,” interactive mobility and efficiency. As you can see in the “Blade” vehicle above, efficiency is improved with the wind turbine that designer Ying Hui Choo added to charge an on-board electric battery.

The 888, designed by Oskar Johansen, pivots at the center and reduces its size for “easier parking, maneuverability and increased visibility.”

Emre Yazici’s “EGO” has two wheels and is controlled Atari-style with a joystick. The windshield doubles as the door. [Telegraph]
