Canceled 5-megapixel Nokia slider almost looks like a fake 01 December 2008 at 9:55 am by admin

If this thing were coming from any source other than the legendary Eldar Murtazin of mobile-review, we’d go ahead and assume this was a knockoff nabbed off eBay for a few bucks — but amazingly, we think it’s the real deal. The dead-on-arrival burgundy slider with gold accents looks like it could’ve been part of a reinvigorated l’Amour series (or something along those lines), clearly putting styling at or near the top of its priorities — but it also steals the 6260 slide’s totally capable guts, which means it features a 5-megapixel camera, tri-band 3G, and a 480 x 320 display. If they had to choose between this and the 6260, the right model came out on top — but we gotta admit, it’s so far outside Nokia’s styling comfort zone that we find it tolerable in a really sick, twisted way.

Verizon drops Omnia to $199, hopes you'll pay attention now

Samsung’s Omnia is nice enough to find a good home in many a professional’s pocket, but in terms of overall desirability it doesn’t quite compare to the iPhone or G1. Why, then, did Verizon price the thing $50 higher than its alternate-platform competition? Your guess is as good as ours, but at least the company didn’t take long to see the error of its ways, dropping the handset under the magic $200 mark just a few days after the early-adopters got done paying too much for theirs. We’re thinking Verizon might have been targeting the $249 Touch Diamond, but really that could do with a price cut of its own. $199 seems about right for an Omnia, so you go right ahead and click on if you want; we’ll wait for the higher-res one, thanks.

+ BlackBerry Storm update leaks to the masses By admin 30 November 2008 at 12:38 am and have No Comments

Okay, remember that bit about waiting for a wide release? Yeah, screw that noise. Firmware 4.7.0.75 for the BlackBerry Storm has drizzled out onto the interwebs, and initial reports from intrepid updaters seem to be generally positive. We can’t verify the authenticity of this sucker, but if you were counting down the minutes until RIM got around to patching up issues and killing some lag, 75 might be a good start. Good luck, friends.

[Thanks, Erik]

+ Black Friday Giveaways (part 10): the LG Prada phone By admin 28 November 2008 at 11:59 pm and have No Comments

We’ve decided to end the Engadget Black Friday Giveaways with a blast from the past. Remember this guy? It seems like only a week ago that Apple was being accused of ripping off this LG and Prada collaboration with the iPhone. Ah… memories. Well, you can at least still impress some folks down at the local discotheque with this one — just make sure no one accidentally pours a vodka and Red Bull on it. Here’s how we do it.

We’ll put up a gadget on the site, and you can only enter it until the next gadget lands (usually within a couple of hours). If you miss your shot, sorry, we’re moving on to the next gadget. Good luck! Oh, and don’t forget the rules. (Yeah, there are always rules.)

  • Leave a comment below. That’s it! Who loves you, baby.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) You can enter different giveaways in today’s Black Friday giveaways, but you can only enter this one once.
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers or US contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winners will be chosen randomly.
  • Entries can be submitted until the next contest goes up. After that we’re all done. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

Last round’s winner: Apitt! (Remember, winners are selected at random.)

+ China’s QiJi i6 supports Android, Windows Mobile, lust in one package By admin 28 November 2008 at 3:01 pm and have No Comments

For now, Android’s got about as much enterprise support as a Sidekick (well okay, a little more, but not much) — so that’s got to be keeping G1s out of the hands of throngs who are too tied-down to Exchange, Notes, or some equally stuffy piece of server-side software to be able to make the switch. China’s QiJi feels your pain, which is where the company’s surprisingly okay-looking i6 comes into play: the handset supports both Android and Windows Mobile, although you can’t dual-boot — you’ve got to choose one and run with it until you decide to install the other. It packs a 624MHz processor, 256MB of ROM, 128MB of RAM, a trackball, and — in lieu of a QWERTY slide — an on-screen Chinese keyboard with stylus support that we haven’t seen before. Android, we love ya and all, but until you go through puberty, this mutli-platform support is just about the best thing we’ve ever heard.

[Thanks, zsx]

+ Meizu M8 gets demoed in multi-part video form By admin 28 November 2008 at 2:34 pm and have No Comments

We’ve already seen it unboxed and, of course, endlessly shown off by Meizu’s own J. Wong, but it looks like some independent demos of the now infamous Meizu M8 are finally starting to crop up online, with one of the first coming from Chinese retailer CNMO.com. While some of the details are lost in translation, there’s still quite a bit to be gleaned from the ten videos available at the link below, not the least of which is the fact that the touchscreen seems to be somewhat of an excercise in patience, to put things kindly — check out part 8 for the challenge that is pausing a track. The phone’s camera also seems to be a bit sluggish, but not completely out of line with your run of the mil cellphone camera. Touchscreen aside, however, the phone’s interface does appear to be fairly slick and, yes, oddly famiilar. Head on past the break to get started with part one of the blow-out, and hit up the read link to check out the rest.

+ Motorola Alexander and Attila spotted, but not clearly By admin 28 November 2008 at 12:05 pm and have No Comments

This is really just confirmation of existence more than anything, given that we’ve already seen purported shots of both the Attila and Alexander before, but at least we’re assured that these forthcoming Motorola smartphones are more than just subjects of one’s Photoshopping escapades. The image you see above is accompanied by no additional information whatsoever, but we must say, these look strangely seductive in greyscale. Could these really be the first truly black-and-white handsets? Do it Moto, we dare you.

+ Samsung’s X360 ultraportable reviewed: cheaper than competition, but not as good By admin 28 November 2008 at 11:31 am and have No Comments

cheaper than competition, but not as good

If Apple’s Macbook Air is the poster-child for “form-over-function,” and Lenovo’s X300 its utilitarian cousin, Samsung’s X360 falls somewhere in between on the 13.3-inch wafter-thin ultraportable family tree, serving as another solid, though somewhat underwhelming choice according to TrustedReviews‘ full write-up. It’s not as thin as the Air, but is slightly lighter while still feeling reasonably durable, and with a full complement of ports certainly has the edge in terms of utility. It also manages to be a bit more visually appealing than the X300, is blessed with a “superb” keyboard (which we liked, too), and the five hours of battery life in real-world usage impresses as well. But, it’s hampered by a disappointing 1280 x 800 glossy screen and an under-performing 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo CPU. The thing is popping up at online retailers a bit cheaper than we’d expected (we found one for about $150 lower than Samsung’s indicated $1,899 MSRP), but, in the US at least, might just be priced a little too close to its proven competitors to make it a serious contender over here.

[Thanks, Simon W]

+ Meizu M8 unboxed before December 8th launch By admin 28 November 2008 at 6:46 am and have No Comments

Can you believe it? After two years and any number of missed targets, Meizu’s M8 cellphone is bound and determined to meet its November 30th 8 December launch date. As proof, they’ve shipped a first unit to China’s PConline for review. Hmm, white earbuds, charger, and USB cable… imagine that.
