Wall-mounted touchpad light switch ends accidental in-home raves

Flipping on a light switch usually doesn’t require much in the way of cranial fortitude, but mount three or four of the things in a row and it’s Concentration time whenever you try to flick the right one. Japanese graphic designer Mac Funamizu feels your shame, imagining a conceptual wall-mounted touchpad to end the confusion and inadvertent light shows. With his invention you’d simply drag your finger toward the light you want to turn on, do it again to turn it off, or make a circular sweep to illuminate the whole room. It certainly seems a bit more useful than other switches we’ve covered in the past, but until we see a version that will register our gestures from the couch we’ll stick with our Clappers, thank you very much.

+ Nikon’s D3X DSLR hits the scene in official fashion By admin 01 December 2008 at 12:21 am and have No Comments

After a quick outting in its own mag, Nikon has gone and gotten all officially official on the D3X. The big boy DSLR sports a bone-crushing 24.5-megapixel CMOS FX format sensor, full resolution shooting at 5 FPS, ISO from 100-1600 (expandable to 50-6400), TIFF, JPEG or NEF (RAW) file formats up to 138MB, and a newly updated EXPEED image processing system. The top-tier digicam won’t come super cheap, hitting shelves at $7,999.95 — but if you need something like this, money probably isn’t much of an issue. The camera goes on sale this December, so you might want to get the piggy banks out. Check the gallery below for a full look at the magic.

+ Art Lebedev outthinks the room with square Luxofor traffic lights By admin 22 November 2008 at 12:05 pm and have No Comments

We can only imagine that at least a few staffers over at Art Lebedev Studios get paid to do nothing but conjure up ideas, because this one is just marvelous. And marvelously simple, but that’s beside the point. The Luxofor traffic light concept improves upon a nearly archaic design that still relies on spherical fixtures when there’s really no need. Lebedev’s team asserts that using square lights backed with bright laser diodes would make better use of the available space and provide a more noticeable signal to drowsy motorists. The roar of “why didn’t I think of that?” being simultaneously stated is downright deafening.

+ Intel’s convertible Classmate PC barely makes it to FCC class By admin 22 November 2008 at 10:18 am and have No Comments

Although the third-generation Classmate PC looked completely unprepared for the real world comin’ out of IFA, Intel has clearly hit the books during the fall term. Now, the convertible Classmate has graduated to the FCC, where we’re shown a user’s manual, label ID and a smattering of pathetic images. If you’re thinking this bugger’s just on cruise control until diploma day, you’ve got another thing coming, but we have heard that it’s taking a job on US soil right after the holiday break.

+ Oki’s robot chair heralds a new age of robot-aided seating By admin 05 November 2008 at 10:20 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

The chair is a tool of extreme simplicity and antiquity, and many would argue that it’s foolish to mess with something that obviously attained perfection with the advent of air conditioned seat cushions. Of course, those people have never seen Leopard, the high-tech “concept chair” that takes technology originally developed for Oki’s Robot Leg (an entire robot with design principles based on the human leg) and places it under your posterior for “seating comfort akin to being held in someone’s arms.” This is a chair that adjusts itself to your back, cradles your bum, and gives you a helpful little boost when it’s time to stand up. Sound wasteful? Extravagant? How about totally awesome? Hit the read link for more details, and feel free to check out the fun little picture of the Robot Leg after the break.

+ JVC’s Sound Garden Concept Is Modular, Bonsai’d-Up Concealed Speaker System [Concept] By admin 31 October 2008 at 4:35 am and have No Comments

An attempt at blending eco-friendliness with interesting design, it’s a full hi-fi speaker system with bass-reflex ports and the whole deal, alongside little pot-like areas to insert plants. And it’s all made of “eco-plastic,” designed so you can connect together several of the elements to make a whole hive-like sculpture of audio and greenery. Did I point out it’s weirdness? Oh I did. Thank goodness it’s just a concept. [a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=enu=http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/20081031/victor.htm"AVWatch/a]/p br style=”clear: both;”/

+ Food Pyramid Ensures You Your Veggies and Your Job [Food] By admin 29 October 2008 at 9:00 pm and have No Comments

pimg src=”http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/10/foodlunchbox_03.jpg” width=”468″ height=”350″ style=”display:block;float:none;” /What could be more useful than this concept of a food pyramid designed to keep your portions in check and to make you eat the right amount of veggies? If there is anything that I consistently do all day long besides working for Gizmodo, it’s probably putting anything edible within reach into my mouth. Whether I’m slowly making it my mission to make every Kit Kat on earth disappear, or having my stomach growl embarrassingly in front of my co-workers, I live for lunch where I get to chow down and thoroughly ravage my plate each day. Usually afterwards, I sink into a major food coma, which is exactly why this concept is perfect for me. After this article is published though, my boss will probably know why my productivity plummets in the afternoon.
