+ Carlon, ‘Cantaloupe’: Free MP3 of the Day By admin 01 December 2008 at 3:01 am and have No Comments

Sometimes, a band will record in a warehouse so they can tell people they recorded in a warehouse. And sometimes, they’ll do it to sound like this. No strangers to the post-industrial motif–they’re from Jersey–Carlon drop a swoony stunner that makes full use of its cavernous space.

+ LG to launch "one or two" 3D TVs in 2009 By admin 26 November 2008 at 3:30 pm and have No Comments

Deny it all you please, but the 3D revolution is here. LG is just the next brand in the growing line of consumer companies that are caving to the three-dee pressure, and according to Choon Lee, Vice President Director at the Digital TV Research Lab, LG will be launching at least one 3D TV next year. To quote: “3D TVs are the next big step for [LG]; we will try with one or two markets in 2009.” Regrettably, that’s about all the details he would give up, stopping short of confessing to which markets would first see the devices and when exactly during the course of next year they would launch. It’s cool, though — gives us ample time to get used to wearing those hideous glasses around the house without tripping over foreign objects.

+ Blockbuster joins the movie set-top-box game with 2Wire MediaPoint player By admin 24 November 2008 at 9:48 pm and have No Comments

We’ve rubbed our eyes four or five times now, but the factual heat remains: Blockbuster — of all companies — has decided to dive headfirst into the movie set-top-box arena. We wanted to believe the rumors were false, but sure enough, it has joined VUDU, Apple TV, Roku and the Xbox 360 in the highly competitive market place for your digital download dollars. For a “limited time,” the outfit will offer the 2Wire-built MediaPoint player for free with the “advance rental of 25 first-run movies, TV shows, foreign or classic films from Blockbuster On-Demand (previously Movielink) for $99.” After that, rentals are $1.99 apiece, and a Blockbuster subscription is not required. The unit itself measures 8- x 8- x 1-inch and includes two USB ports, an SD slot, Ethernet / WiFi and an HDMI port, and it should be available at the company’s website and in select retail stores very soon. So, are you interested in the à la carte approach?

Western Digital does not believe in SSDs, Santa Claus

The holidays are upon us and, at a time when many are set to celebrate their faiths and beliefs, Western Digital’s Senior VP for Marketing Richard Rutledge is clarifying one of his company’s: now is not the right time for SSDs. Apparently WD only “enters markets that exist,” and while we could understand about him being unsure of the many spiritual entities banded about this time of year, we’re rather confident the competition are believers, and they have plenty of milk and cookies laid out for holiday shoppers. Rutledge did indicate WD is looking at creating both low-end SSDs for smartphones and ultraportables as well as high-end ones for “enterprise” applications, but only “when they present appropriate opportunity.” Hurry up and get with the program, WD, or you’re going to be left crying and holding a lump of coal while all the other companies bring their increased revenues to show and tell.

+ Netbooks from Asus, MSI, and Hello Kitty: The week in laptops By admin 21 November 2008 at 8:25 pm and have No Comments

Eee PC 1002HA

After a brief respite, Netbooks came to the foreground again this week. Virtual unknown Raon Digital grabbed everyone’s attention with the dual-core, touch-screen Everun Note. Asus showed off its new brushed-metal design with the Eee PC 1002HA (pictured at right). And Dell launched new colors and graphic designs for …

+ Raon Everun Note: Dual-core, touch-screen Netbook By admin 20 November 2008 at 12:20 pm and have No Comments

What’s this, a dual-core Netbook? Every Netbook we’ve reviewed to date has featured a single-core CPU, which in almost all cases has been the 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270. Not so with Raon Digital’s Everun Note, which casts aside the Atom in favor of …

+ Digital Recipe Reader Copies iPhone UI, Scams Grandma By admin 19 November 2008 at 4:14 pm and have No Comments

Neiman_2
The Demy Digital Recipe Reader from Neiman Marcus is not modeled on the iPhone at all.

The minimalist design, the large touch-screen, and the cube-shaped glossy menu icons really do not remind us of the ubiquitous media player.

Alright, so we are kidding. But who are they kidding? Unsuspecting moms everywhere, it seems, as Neiman Marcus is taking the opportunity of the holiday season to sell these at the premium price of $300. I actually overheard an older couple in a city store talking about this as a gift possibility for their daughter a few weeks ago.

The problem is that it is $100 more than the cheapest iPhone (8GB), which could easily serve as the main kitchen helper and access thousands of recipes online. (Did anyone say Epicurious?)

The only apparent difference between the devices is that this one is ’splash resistant,’ and of course, doesn’t make calls, play movies, or have hundreds of interesting other online applications, like the steak cooking timer. And you can cover the iPhone with any available crappy plastic protectors.

Steve_koolaid2_2
With the recipe reader, you can upload your own recipes to the device by syncing to your computer and it holds up to 2,500 recipes. It does have a slightly bigger screen though, at 7 inches.

But really, the only way this could be a more shameless copy of the iPhone was if it had a picture of Steve Jobs serving up pie with his regular Kool-Aid at a bountiful Thanksgiving feast.

Is this the perfect gag gift for the Apple aficionado who can’t wait for his third iPhone Touch? We think so.

+ ‘Guitar Praise’ lets you ‘blast that solid Christian rock’ By admin 18 November 2008 at 3:51 pm and have No Comments

If you’ve been champing at the bit to play some Guitar Hero, but have found that the music contained therein just doesn’t meld with your Christian values, you may be in luck.

Digital Praise, a maker of Christian computer games, has released Guitar Praise, which …
