Apple Fixes Wonky Glass Trackpads 18 November 2008 at 3:50 am by admin

Apple has issued MacBook Pro Trackpad Firmware Update 1.0, a fix for the trackpad troubles experienced by many users of the new glass-trackpad equipped unibody notebooks.

Many owners have reported that the muti touch trackpads were failing to register clicks on the giant, full-pad button, with some seeing a failed click around one time in 10 (Kevin Rose and Leo Laporte both mentioned this on the This Week in Tech podcast).

It’s an odd firmware update which acts more like a plain calibration fix — normally a firmware update requires a restart. Our suspicion is that Apple was a little conservative with the click-detection settings in the original release to stave off complaints about accidental clicking, and has simply tweaked them with this release.

One of the things I always turn off on older Mac notebooks is the “Tap to Click” option. And our ongoing mission to add two-finger scrolling to the Gadget Lab Hackintoshes shows just how difficult it is to calibrate a trackpad to work perfectly.

If you have experienced these troubles, grab the download from Apple’s site now, or check your Software Update.

+ iPhone 2.2 Update Coming Nov. 21 By admin 11 November 2008 at 2:53 pm and have No Comments

A web site claims hearing from an unnamed, "reliable source" that the next major iPhone firmware update is just 10 days away.

The source told iPhone Hellas that iPhone 2.2 will be available for download Nov. 21. Earlier, iPhone Hellas published images purporting to be leaked screenshots
revealing new features, including direct podcast downloading, Google
Street view, a redesigned Safari browser interface and others.

As
always, rumors from an unnamed source should be taken with a grain of
salt. But Nov. 21 would be a realistic release date for iPhone 2.2.
Apple released iPhone 2.1
on Sept. 12 — two months and one day after the release if iPhone 2.0.
Therefore, it’s reasonable to expect a major upgrade very soon.

+ Sansa Fuze updated to support Ogg and FLAC By admin 04 October 2008 at 5:18 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

SanDisk just released a firmware update for the Sansa Fuze — pretty minor, except it adds in support for FLAC and Ogg, which should make fans of jam bands and lossless music encoding extremely happy. Nothing much else of note here apart from some UI tweaks and big fixes, but Fuze owners will be appreciative, we’re sure.

+ Sony issues firmware update for Alpha A700 DSLR By admin 16 September 2008 at 5:06 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

Sony’s Alpha A700 has been pleasing (or displeasing, we suppose), users for just over a year now, but those that have stuck with it in spite of a few issues can now smile brightly. Sony has just unleashed a firmware update for the DSLR which reportedly adds in an option to select auto exposure bracketing (single and continuous) with 3 shots in 2 EV steps and gives the choice to nix the High ISO NR feature. Furthermore, it supposedly improves the image quality in a high ISO setting, the auto white balance and D-Range Optimizer performance and the reliability for communication between camera body and vertical grip. Any owners out there care to give a shout on how their rig is performing post-update?
