Cineversum intros $6,500 BlackWing One 1080p projector 26 November 2008 at 2:23 pm by admin

If the BlackWing Three was just a touch too rich for your blood, yet you dug what Cineversum had going on, have a look at this. The BlackWing One 1080p digital video projector relies on three 0.6-inch LCoS panels (all with a 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, obviously) and comes pre-calibrated for optimal performance right out of the box. Additionally, it features a 15,000:1 contrast ratio, 1,400 ANSI lumens, two HDMI 1.3 sockets, an RS-232 control port and a “futuristic deep metallic-black ABS plastic chassis” designed by France’s own Antoine Béon. The first batch is scheduled to hit North America in mid-December for $6,500 apiece, but those up for spending more can have their unit splashed with a custom color.

+ T-Mobile G1 now available in frosty white By admin 26 November 2008 at 1:50 pm and have No Comments

We’ve heard that it’s been showing up on doorsteps and in stores for a few days now, but T-Mobile has just officially given the word that the G1 is now available in white to complement bronze and the especially personality-free black (not to say there’s anything wrong with that, black G1 owners). The price, hardware, and software are all the same, so if you thought this release might somehow magically bring a soft keyboard with it, think again. Any guesses what — if any — future colors we might see on this puppy?

+ Confirmed: Google was naughty, broke App Store rules with iPhone app By admin 26 November 2008 at 1:25 pm and have No Comments

Okay, any talk that consistency in Apple’s approval process for the App Store has improved definitely has to be put on hold at this point; first we had that BdEmailer situation that duplicates functionality (albeit shoddily) of the iPhone’s own email capabilities, and now we have official confirmation that Google did a no-no when it slipped its voice-powered search through the checkpoint. The problem is that enabling the automatic voice detection requires use of an undocumented API call for the proximity sensor that Apple neither guarantees nor approves use of, meaning firmware updates can break it at will. In and of itself, that’s not a huge indiscretion on Google’s part since they’re probably committed to keeping it up-to-date, but the real issue is that this violates an explicit rule of the App Store that bans the use of undocumented calls. Apple, guys, seriously: if you want to be jerks about what gets through and what doesn’t, fine — but at least do it consistently so it doesn’t look like you’re favoring companies run by members of your own executive board (or in the case of BdEmailer, companies that are doing a bang-up job of making your own products look better).

+ Eee PC 901GO with faster SSD and a bigger battery surfaces in France By admin 17 November 2008 at 6:23 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

The Eee PC 901 has always been the sweet spot model in ASUS’s alphabet soup of a netbook line, and the 901GO launched today in France makes it even more desirable with a larger 8700mAh battery and a faster 16GB SSD capable of 50MB/s writes and 87MB/s reads. Of course, you can get the same 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and 8.9-inch screen in the 900A for $280, so the new 901GO’s €399 ($505) pricetag seems perhaps a bit much, but the cutting edge ain’t a cheap place to live, kids.

The Yubz telephone makes the argument that even iPhones can’t escape irony’s tacky, far-reaching arm. For $50 and the cost of shipping from France, you can own this ridiculous handset that plugs into your iPhone and lets you pretend you’re Donald Trump in the early …

+ T-Mobile halts Nokia 5610 sales By admin 07 November 2008 at 1:42 pm and have No Comments

T-Mobile's Nokia 5610 may have a problem.

(Credit: Corinne Schulze/CNET Networks)

This is a bit troubling, particularly since it affects one of the better (or so we thought) T-Mobile phones that we’ve seen this year. On Thursday, the carrier suspended sales of the Nokia 5610 Xpress Music.

According to T-Mobile, a “very small” percentage of devices suffer from a defective component that causes the display to go blank. We didn’t see such a problem on our review device, but if you’re stuck with one of the faulty phones you can contact T-Mobile to “discuss available options” (whatever that means). Nokia has otherwise done a decent job with its Xpress Music phones, so we hope the problem stops here. The full text of the T-Mobile statement is after the jump.

+ Manufacturing delays said to be slowing XPERIA X1 sales By admin 04 November 2008 at 12:04 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

As you might have noticed, there’s already plenty of Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1s out in the wild by this point, but there’s apparently not quite as many as SE would like, and it’s laying the blame on some slightly mysterious manufacturing delays. According to IDG News, Sweden, Germany and the U.K. have been hardest hit by the delays, but Sony Ericsson isn’t about to get much more specific than that about the matter, saying simply that a lack of “certain materials” is causing the shortages. The company has said, however, that more phones should be shipping into Sweden in the next few days, with the U.K. and Germany set to get additional shipments in the next few weeks. It also says that planned launches in other countries like Switzerland, France, and Singapore, to name a few, won’t be affected by the delays, and that the phone is still on track to be released in the US sometime in November.
