In case you missed it, last week TechARP said that Vista SP2 is scheduled for an April 2009 release to manufacturing — that means not you… not yet anyway. We’re guessing that it will hit a month later for general release if the Vista SP1 rollout was any indication. So who’s TechARP? Oh just the same group of Malaysian kids that like to boast about how they broke the Vista SP1 and XP SP3 release schedules to the world. That makes their “confidential source” worth listening to. The source adds that Microsoft will deliver a SP2 release candidate as early as February so we’ll know soon enough how accurate this rumor is.

No matter how accustomed we should be by now, it’s always jarring to see one of the Nokia N-series phones drop at some outlandish unsubsidized price — if you think the $556 tag on this N85 is hefty, keep in mind that Amazon is claiming that’s already been steeply discounted from an atmospheric $1,200 “list price.” While the phone is available to “buy” right this second at Amazon.com, there’s a 3 to 5 week ship time quoted, so there’s no telling if this’ll be the first spot to nab the hotly-anticipated, N96-besting AMOLED handset in the States — though it might be the first to take your hard earned cash for such a purpose.

Oh sure, there’s bound to be some protrusion when shoving a retro console into a gaming handheld, but inelegant styling was a way of life for Sega back in the mid-90s. Modder Chris Koopa has achieved the impossible by stuffing an Atari 2600 (or the important parts, anyway) along with 40 games into a hacked up Game Gear and enabling it to operate for nearly a full workday with just five AA batteries. And yeah, there’s totally a 2600 cartridge slot to allow for playback of original titles. You know you’re oddly interested in seeing more, so tap the read link for a few shots from the rear / side.

With Black Friday a thing of the past and the holiday season rapidly approaching, you want to hook up everyone you know with something nice. Amazon’s trying to make that a bit easier on the wallet by offering up refurbished Kindles for $329 straight up — a first for the funky little ebook reader. While it’s not as much of a price reduction as we would have liked, it is a start, but with new devices and pricing rumored for early 2009, to us it just seems like too little, too late.

We’ve heard that it’s been showing up on doorsteps and in stores for a few days now, but T-Mobile has just officially given the word that the G1 is now available in white to complement bronze and the especially personality-free black (not to say there’s anything wrong with that, black G1 owners). The price, hardware, and software are all the same, so if you thought this release might somehow magically bring a soft keyboard with it, think again. Any guesses what — if any — future colors we might see on this puppy?

If you haven’t succumbed to the DS Lite’s embrace by now, we’re not sure this pair of bundles will do the trick, and if you already have a DS Lite in your posse you’re probably waiting impatiently for the DSi to traipse on over Stateside. Still, we can’t begrudge Nintendo’s God-given right to bundle, and this Ice Blue Brain Age set (with custom carrying case!) and Mario Red New Super Mario Bros set (pictured, with emblazoned “M” logo!) aren’t exactly unattractive. Both are being released this Friday — that Friday — for $150. The Brain Age bundle is pictured after the break.

In the “form factors Nokia hasn’t fully explored, but probably should” bucket, side-sliding QWERTY candybars ranks pretty dang high on the list, so we’re delighted to see that — as far as we can tell, anyway — Espoo’s still hard at work banging out the details of its E75. We’re told to expect WiFi (naturally), a 3.2-megapixel camera, and a 2.4-inch display, but more importantly, you’ve got a generous keyboard that should give the S740 a serious run for its money. We’re a bit concerned about usability on a totally flush keyboard like this (E90 anyone?), but hey, maybe that’s the reason it hasn’t been announced yet, right?

When reviewing the G1 we found a lot to like, but a lot to dislike too. We knew that some of its shortcomings, like the missing headphone jack, were sadly permanent (free adapters notwithstanding), but hoped that it would just be a matter of time before some enterprising soul (with an enterprising compiler) would take care of another complaint: the lack of multi-touch. Lo and behold now is that time and Ryan Gardner is that coder, author of a little app that proves the inability of the G1 to accept a two-finger salute is not a hardware limitation. You can see for yourself in a video after the break, and once Ryan is done cleaning up his code he pledges to post that, too (don’t forget those comments, man). Okay, so being able to cover your screen with red and yellow splotches isn’t going to convert any spoiled iPhoners, but we’re thinking the rest of you developers out there should be able to pick up this ball and run with it. So make with the running, already.

So you’ve read our extensive BlackBerry Storm review and, despite feeling disappointment about it not living up to the hype, can’t help but wonder just what makes the thing tick click. While we were a bit too squeamish to rip one of ours apart and find out, phoneWreck felt no qualms about turning this week’s hottest handset into a pile of bits, exposing (among numerous other things) the Qualcomm MSM7600 processor that’s blamed for the phone’s sluggish performance. As to how the clicky screen works, it’s rather simple: just a plate behind the display (pictured above) with a dimple to push a button on a circuit board. Never dissect your heroes, kids; it just takes the mystery out of life.

Apparently the dmedia G400 MID was announced at the WiMAX Expo in Taipei back in June, but this is the first we’ve seen of it, and solid information is still a little hard to come by. The device will boast a 800 x 400 touchscreen, WiMAX, HSDPA / WCDMA, and GPS radios, a microSD slot, and will come in both 3.8-inch and 4.3-inch configurations. From what we could glean, the system with run atop a SiRFprima CPU, though we haven’t seen a lot (say, any) of MIDs using those chips. So, is this actually just a glorified PND? It’s hard to say, but we hear the units will hit retail sometime in the beginning of 2009, though we don’t know how much they’ll cost or where they’ll be available.
