HANNspree’s 28-inch 1080p HT09 LCD HDTV comes to America for $500 24 November 2008 at 11:40 am by admin

Just in time for brands like Vizio, Panasonic, Sony and Sanyo to undercut it on Black Friday, HANNspree has swooped in and delivered its bedroom-sized 1080p LCD HDTV to the great lands of North America. The set, which was made available a few months prior in the UK, claims to be the planet’s first 28-inch “1080p” HDTV, with a native 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, two HDMI ports, a VGA socket, integrated ATSC / NTSC / Clear QAM tuner, 3-millisecond response time, 3,000:1 contrast ratio, stereo speakers (5-watts x 2), audio in / out ports and an Energy Star 3.0 sticker for good measure. Not too shabby for $499.99, and we’d count on finding it even cheaper given the current level of competition in the sector.

+ Mobispine pens tell all about their iPhone MMS app, doesn’t exactly tell all By admin 24 November 2008 at 11:07 am and have No Comments

We’ve heard a few things about the Mobispine MMS app supposedly being developed for the iPhone, but the company’s just answered a couple of questions, and we thought we’d give you a quick rundown. Interestingly, the app will utilize Apple’s announced but delayed push notification, which Mobispine says is due “pretty soon,” though carriers may use SMS notification in lieu of the service. The company says that the app will be carrier-branded, and that it will be up to them how much to charge you, the MMS-starved consumer. Mobispine says that the software will “probably” be made available through the App Store, “probably” because it’s still in some vague phase of development, and has yet to be approved by Apple. Just let us know when the thing is ready, okay guys?

[Thanks, Carlos]

+ Engadget HD catches the Media Center DirecTV HDPC-20 in action By admin 19 November 2008 at 3:05 pm and have No Comments

The crew over at Engadget HD was part of a tour of the Microsoft eHome lab and was lucky enough to catch the un-announced DirecTV HDPC-20 in testing. Unfortunately Microsoft wasn’t ready to announce any new products and even reminded everyone that things in the lab don’t always make it to market. But despite this, we still have our hopes up that we’ll one day soon be able to watch DirecTV HD on Windows Media Center.

+ Ultimate Ears rolls out top-firing Super.Fi 5 earphones By admin 19 November 2008 at 2:05 pm and have No Comments

It looks like those still on the hunt for that perfect pair of sub-$200 earphones now have a rather intriguing new option to consider from Ultimate Ears, which has just rolled out its new Super.Fi 5 and Super.Fi 5vi models that boast a top-fire-armature speaker design — the first such buds on the market. In addition to that stand-out feature, both sets pack a frequency response range of 15 Hz to 15 kHz and a top sound pressure level of 115 dB, while the Super.Fi 5vi adds a mic to mix to let you use ‘em with your phone of choice. You’ll also get three interchangeable soft-silicone ear tips and two Comply foam ear tips with each to ensure just the right fit and, of course, a carrying case to keep ‘em in pristine shape. If those sound like the buds you’ve been looking for, you can grab either the Super.Fi 5 or Super.Fi 5vi right now for $170 and $190, respectively.

+ Does anyone really need a 16:9 15-inch laptop? By admin 13 November 2008 at 12:30 pm and have No Comments

The HP G60-125nr

The move from traditional 16:10 laptop displays to 16:9 ones that mirror HDTV screens is shift that’s here to stay, judging by the mini-flood of new 18-inch and 16-inch systems that have crossed our desk. What’s a little odder is that we’ve …

+ Pioneer’s 37-inch KRL-37V KURO LCD reviewed: other LCDs should be scared By admin 03 November 2008 at 1:06 pm and have No Comments

Anyone remotely familiar with the KURO brand knows that with it comes the expectation of awesomeness (and a large price tag), and the question on everyone’s mind has been: will the KURO LCD line live up to the name? According to TrustedReview’s critique of the 37-inch KRL-37V, the answer is a resounding “yes.” The reviewers put together five long-winded pages detailing the ins and outs of this here set, but in general, they found that it produced better pictures than most other LCDs on the market today, and that’s saying something. Sure, it wasn’t without its flaws — there were occurrences where odd color tones popped up in SD footage, black levels weren’t astonishing and the viewing angles weren’t the greatest — but the colors in HD were simply terrific. ‘Tis a shame we North Americans will have to wait until sometime next year before we can even have a look for ourselves, but those in Europe may want to give this one some serious attention.

+ Samsung SDI shows off 63-inch 4k x 2k plasma By admin 30 October 2008 at 11:47 pm and have No Comments

There’s a slight possibility that you haven’t noticed, but Samsung SDI is on fire. Like, seriously burning down FPD International 2008. After treating onlookers to a flexible OLED, a 40-inch Full HD OLED display and an assortment of other eye-enticing panels, the outfit has one-upped itself once more with a 63-inch 4k x 2k plasma. Sure, actually finding 4k x 2k content will be a challenge, but who wouldn’t want to be ready for the inevitable worldwide domination of Super Hi-Vision? Most of the other specs (contrast ratio, luminance, where it’s being stored with loose security, etc.) were sadly absent, but with a native resolution like this, the rest takes a back seat anyway.

+ PSP-3000 proving to be difficult for hackers to crack By admin 30 October 2008 at 8:28 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

The PSP has proven to be quite the popular system among hackers and modders of all sorts, but it looks like Sony has turned the tables a bit with its latest PSP-3000 model (otherwise known as the PSP Brite), which has so far put up a stiff resistance against folks’ attempts to put it to some decidedly unofficial uses. Among other things, the PSP-3000 has apparently completely shut shutting down the popular Pandora battery hack, and it’s even managed to stifle new attempts by heavyweight modders like Dark Alex to crack it open. One modder, known only as Royginald, even went so far as to swap the PSP-3000’s CPU out in favor of one from a PSP-2000, only to discover far too late that the 3000’s new interlaced video made the entire setup quite useless. Maybe that’s one of the “features” Sony was talking about?
