Sprint posts Q3 net loss of $326 million, sees 1.3 million subs leave 07 November 2008 at 9:45 am by admin

Filed under:

Sprint’s year just keeps getting worse. After losing over 900,000 customers last quarter while posting a $344 million loss, the company insistent on advertising with faux soap operas and in black and white (and yellow) is hanging its head once more. During Q3, the carrier saw 1.3 million net subscribers head for the exits, and it also reported a loss of $326 million. According to CEO Dan Hesse, Sprint “has yet to turn the corner,” warning that the process of turning things around would be gradual. Moving forward, the company expects gross additions to “stabilize,” while the turnover rate is apt to remain at around 2.15%. In related news, the provider’s stock price has sunk around 60% in the past six months, and while that’s surely bad news to shareholders, not many other mega-corps out there are doing tremendously better.

+ Nintendo moves over 170,000 DSi handhelds at Japanese launch By admin 05 November 2008 at 1:24 pm and have No Comments

Nah, Nintendo didn’t move as many DSi handhelds in Japan as it did DS units in America last Thanksgiving, but hey, the week’s not over yet. Even in the midst of an economic slowdown, the Big N managed to sell through 170,779 DSis during the first two days of its Japanese launch. Many outlets had just enough stock to appease those that pre-ordered, and small queues were present in a variety of locales. That’s a number that Nintendo’s surely proud of, particularly since total Japanese sales of the original DS and the DS Lite stood at 23.6 million at the end of October, or about one DS for every fifth person in the nation. Who says a sleek redesign can’t rekindle interest?

+ AT&T Fuze dummies popping up in stores By admin 05 November 2008 at 12:56 pm and have No Comments

Sprint beat ‘em with the Touch Pro, but that doesn’t mean a throng of AT&T customers aren’t going to be delighted to hear that the Fuze is now shipping to stores — sort of. Retail locations are receiving dummy Fuzes now, which don’t do much good if you’re trying to store contacts, make appointments, or place calls, but at least give us a solid indication that retail availability ain’t too far off. Sorry, Tilt — you had a good run, but our lust definitely lies elsewhere at this point.

+ Apple (probably) prepping a patch for mysterious clicking issue on new MacBooks By admin 05 November 2008 at 12:33 pm and have No Comments

We’re normally fans of “quirky,” but there’s nothing more frustrating than a quirky clicking experience, as has been reported by many of the ungrateful bastages who’ve snapped up the new MacBook and MacBook Pros since launch. The primary reported problem was with certain physical clicks not registering on that schmancy new glass trackpad, no small annoyance. Earlier this week an email from a disgruntled user to Mr. Customer Support himself, Steve Jobs, was responded to by a call from Apple’s customer relations saying that they were “researching” the issue, and a couple days later a similar request from another user was met with a terse email from Steve: “Software fix coming soon.” Of course, these conversations could all be the delusional fantasies of click-addled attention hounds, but we’re going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that Apple does in fact have a fix in the works for this problem. So, while they toss that presumed update together, how has the new trackpad been treating you?

+ HTC’s Touch HD now available for £514.99 By admin 05 November 2008 at 12:00 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

It’s not apt to ever go on sale in America (okay, so maybe there’s a sliver of a sliver of a chance), but HTC’s Touch HD is now on sale for fortunate Britons with a fair amount of poundage to spare. The drop-dead gorgeous WinMo 6.1 handset can be procured right now for £514.99 ($821) sans contract, but if you’re a North American mulling an import, you should obviously tack on a few more bills to that. You’re still mulling, aren’t you?

+ AU Optronics’ miraculous LCD Panels can read fingerprints or UV levels By admin 05 November 2008 at 11:29 am and have No Comments

Filed under:

Female? User of LCD panels? Have fingerprints that need read? Worried about skin cancer? If you answer “yes” to any or all of these questions, we have news that is sure to knock your sun-lovin’ socks off. Among the items on display at this year’s FPD International Exhibition in Yokohama are two exciting LCD panels: they’re both 2.8 inches, and they’re both manufactured by AU Optronics (a company that knows a thing or two about liquid crystal displays). The first panel functions as a fingerprint scanner — it boasts a pixel count of 320 x 240, each pixel is equipped with four optical sensors, and sends its output to a 640 x 480 monitor. The other panel uses similar technology to measure the intensity of UV rays, numerically displaying the results on a scale of 0 to 11. According to the company, the UV reader “is targeted at female users who are concerned about the amount of UV light outdoors.” There’s no word yet on a UV reader for men, but you’ll know as soon as we do.

+ Pioneer forecasts even wider net loss, names new president By admin 03 November 2008 at 3:35 pm and have No Comments

As the flagging economy wreaks havoc on just about every mega-corp out there, the latest to publicly admit to being affected is Pioneer. After posting a rather significant loss earlier this year, the company is now guiding to a wider-than-forecast net loss of ¥78 billion ($789.9 million) for the year to March 31, blaming the surging yen and the slowing economy. The company is scheduled to nix its unprofitable plasma-panel operations by February and slash 2,000 jobs this fiscal year in order to counter the bleeding, and it looks as if former president Tamihiko Sudo is one of the first bigwigs to fall. As of November 16th, Susumu Kotani (pictured right) will take over that role, though we can’t imagine he’s looking forward to grabbing the captain’s chair in such a turbulent environment.

+ Motorola to layoff 3,000 employees, most of ‘em in handset division By admin 02 November 2008 at 6:20 am and have No Comments

Filed under:

To be honest, we were surprised that we didn’t hear this number along with the other doom and gloom professed during Motorola’s Q3 earnings call, but the writing was very clearly on the wall. As part of the mentioned $800 million expenditure cut planned for 2009, 3,000 (more) of Moto’s employees will be looking for work elsewhere. According to an unnamed spokeswoman, a “little over two-thirds of those layoffs [will be] in the handset division.” And just think — if Moto would only use all those hands to get an Android-powered phone out before “entirely too long from now,” maybe these cuts wouldn’t even be necessary. Maybe.

+ Verizon considering crazy cheap Storm pricing? By admin 31 October 2008 at 5:33 pm and have No Comments

Any Storm hopeful in the colonies who’s taken a gander at Vodafone’s pricing scheme this week is probably strongly considering packing a couple duffel bags with the bare essentials they need to survive and moving to the UK to strike out on a new life — a life filled with cheap Storms. Not so fast, though — is it conceivable to think that Verizon could go the same route? At first glance, you might think that the Storm’s cachet as RIM’s flashiest, highest-end device to date would be enough to lure in customers by the droves at any price, but with the enormous price pressure placed on the industry by a $199 iPhone 3G in a heavily-overlapping target demo, rumor has it that Big Red’s looking at a severe subsidy to meet or beat its crosstown rival. Analysts are thinking (wishfully, we suspect) that a $99 Storm isn’t entirely out of the question if Verizon wants to sell an insane number of ‘em through the holidays, but just how long would it take to recoup that kind of loss?
