The recently-announced Nintendo DSi will not, as confirmed by a Nintendo spokesperson, replace the DS Lite in the U.S. Her reasoning? The DS Lite is in half of all Japanese households, but only a fifth of U.S. households. Apparently this kind of whirlwind success actually means there is “huge untapped potential” for the Lite, so Nintendo is going to let the two brothers sit side by side, at least for awhile. YouTube will now run a post-roll commercial after you watch a clip if you don’t click on the overlay advertisement that pops-up on partner videos. It’s the kind of exciting, innovative thinking from re-hire Ben Ling, who was brought back into the Google mothership to figure out how to turn YouTube’s revenue deficit frown upside down. It’s also the kind of thinking that YouTube once attempted to scientifically prove users didn’t like, but not the kind of thinking that Eric Schmidt has been telling anyone who will listen. The news also comes on the heels of YouTube’s release of “hot spot” tracking — so you can better craft your narrative to make sure people stick around long enough for the commercial to play. If you’re hoping Blu-ray will get cheaper, sooner—thanks to weak sales and that whole economy thing—hug your DVDs tight. Blu-ray Disc Association Chairman Andy Parsons says prices won’t be deflating for a while. And it’s precisely because you’re not buying enough Blu-ray! “There’s not enough market [volume] to lower the price.”
No, there has to be Michael Bay-sized “awareness and demand for the technology” before it can get more affordable. So buy more Blu-ray, dammit. And then you can afford more Blu-ray, see? Still, this pace is kind of a problem if the format’s going to be dead in five years like Samsung says, no? We’re not the kind of assholes to say we told—okay, yeah we totally are.
