Keyboard for Blondes. Clue: It’s Pink 26 November 2008 at 7:20 am by admin

Keyboard_for_blondes_pic

That headline isn’t a cynical, ill thought-out slur on the fairer haired members of humanity. I’d never do that — after all, some of my best friends are blonde.

The Keyboard for Blondes is, in fact the real name of a product made for and by idiots. This $50 chunk of pink plastic is likely the same one you could pick up in beige from your local dime-store, but instead of the usual keycap markings, you get such hilarious gems as The Big One (spacebar), Oops! (backspace), No! (escape) and Useless Key (command or control, depending on what computer you plug it into).

Here’s a quote from the site:

Something about it will remind you of the Reese Witherspoon’s character.

There is also a downloadable driver package which makes the thing talk to you. The download page has a captcha (what?!) and… I’m sorry. I can’t write any more. This is too depressing. The site even spells Mac in all caps (MAC), reminding us that the only real useless key on any keyboard is the caps lock. Sigh.

+ MacBook Air Prototype Sold on Ebay By admin 19 November 2008 at 5:49 am and have No Comments

macbookairprototype-20081118-1.jpg

This MacBook Air was sold by the Californian iTech Systems on Ebay for $730. As it that wasn’t bargain enough, the notebook appears to be an Apple prototype with a temporary plastic botton casing and a misplaced power button. The full listing reads more like a typical Chinglish Ebay description:

The deficiencies known at the time of testing are described here, but this does not preclude the item from additional deficiencies not know to us at the time of inspection.

The Hinge of the LCD is Losing, the Bezzel of the LCD is a litle open on the top corner (see picture more clear)

Unit test and boot fine working perfect. The only problem is Hinges are losing both hinge (something losing inside, we don’t see any broken out side). The picture Belown here is actual unit. So please ask any question before bidding. The Screen LCD look perfect (no dead pixel, no scratches, no blemmis). The outer Case is migh have a little scratches or migh be a little dent from a normal used.

This is Great Unit if you know how to fix both hinge or great parts if using for parts. And also this laptop current run 10.4 Tiger.

Yes, Tiger, an OS that never shipped on the Air. It actually turns out that the Air was running a pre-release build of OS X 10.5 Leopard, rather than Tiger, but for someone who writes “The Hinge of the LCD is Losing”, we can forgive the slip.

How did this mystery Mac make it out of the Cupertino campus? We don’t know for sure, but MacRumors forum member brett33 is the buyer, and he’s as mystified as everyone else. He’s also aware that Apple may want it back:

The black vans haven’t shown up yet, but I have heard helicopters circling.

+ MacBook innards crammed into makeshift mini Mac Pro tower By admin 15 November 2008 at 11:03 am and have No Comments

When we first laid eyes upon the slick box pictured above, we were struck with an eerie feeling of déjà vu. Now, it all makes sense. After receiving an all-but-completely-dead MacBook, one particular modder decided to rip the motherboard out, break out the soldering iron, throw in a few replacement parts and shove everything into a Macally G-S350SUA aluminum hard drive enclosure. Wanna know why? Because he had a peek at this — a Mac Pro Mini mod that popped up here in March. Talk about taking inspiration and improving upon it.

+ iPhone Tethering Plan Could Cost $30 Per Month By admin 13 November 2008 at 6:27 am and have No Comments

death-star-att.jpgSome iPhone owners were lucky enough to have grabbed NetShare from the iTunes Store before Apple buried it under a hill of bluster and lame excuses. The application let you share the iPhone’s 3G connection with other devices via Wi-Fi.

Last week, AT&T boss Ralph De La Vega confirmed that an official tethering plan is in the works, but he didn’t name a price. Today, Ars Technica reports that the plan will be $30 per month for around 5GB of data — the same as AT&T’s BlackBerry plan. It’s just a rumor, but it seems pretty credible.

But why charge extra? After all, iPhone owners already pay a premium for their 3G connection — shouldn’t they be able to use it as they please? Imagine signing up for internet at home and only being able to connect one computer. Not being able to share your iPhone data connection is a little like not being allowed to connect a router to your cable modem — absolutely nonsensical.

We see this as the last coughing fit before these money-milking plans roll over and quietly die. I remember a few years ago back in England I actually did have to supply the MAC address of my computer to the cable company before that computer could connect. Of course, I gave them the address of my router, but this odd stipulation seems as quaint to us now as the current locked-down mobile data plans will seem in a couple of years time. Enjoy it while you can, AT&T.

+ Onion Peels Back Covers, Compares Snow Leopard and Windows 7 By admin 10 November 2008 at 2:51 am and have No Comments

onion-infographic-web.jpg

The splendid, many-layered satire-fest that is The Onion has posted this simple infographic, explaining the differences between the two upcoming new operating systems for Apple and Microsoft.

Apple has already made clear that the new OS X Snow Leopard is a streamlining release — no big new features, just a tightening up of what is already there. It could be argued that Windows 7 will do the same for Vista.

Head over and see the full graphic at the Onion. Our favourite part? The section on touch screen capabilities.

+ Apple chimes in to debunk those Mac mini / iMac rumors By admin 03 November 2008 at 9:20 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

There was a day during an age not far removed from our memory in which Apple would remain dead silent on any murmuring going on regarding its wares — clearly, that day has passed. In a rather unprecedented move, an actual spokesman named Bill Evans emerged from the Cupertino cocoon in order to put to rest all those wildly speculative rumors going on about new iMacs and / or Mac minis. Quite frankly, he uttered that “[Apple's] holiday line-up is set.” Our take? This move is likely being made in order to assure prospective holiday shoppers that buying now is “safe,” and that new gear isn’t just weeks / days / nanoseconds away. C’mon, you know a well-oiled machine like Apple doesn’t want all sorts of about-to-be-outdated Mac inventory clogging its supply chain when Macworld rolls around, don’tcha?

+ Wireless USB startup WiQuest shuts down, leaves the standard in limbo By admin 03 November 2008 at 7:44 pm and have No Comments

Let’s be honest — Wireless USB has never been much more than an afterthought. Sure, we’ve seen it pop up on a few laptops and USB hard drives, but it’s never grabbed hold the way that, say, Bluetooth or WiFi has. On top of that, the underlying technology behind WUSB (that’d be Ultra-Wideband, or UWB) has yet to find favor in the market, with the surging WHDI stealing most of the limelight in the wireless HD arena. At any rate, one of the (only) companies keeping Wireless USB alive has kicked the bucket, as startup WiQuest officially shut its doors after being unable to concoct a “one-chip solution that was capable of delivering the upper-band support necessary for worldwide acceptance.” Granted, Wireless USB isn’t quite six feet under, but it’s safe to say one foot is planted in the proverbial grave.

+ MacBook Cake is Lighter Than Air By admin 03 November 2008 at 6:18 am and have No Comments

sliceofmacbookpro.jpg

Behold, the MacBook Cake! Using a rvolutionary new process, the cake is carved from a single block of chocolate sponge and finished with a silky-smooth gray frosting, Dave’s Apple MacBook Pro Birthday Cake even features a row of status lights to tell you how many calories remain.

The cake, commissioned by Jeremy Schoemaker’s wife for his friend Dave’s birthday, even celebrates the lack of a FireWire 400 port by eschewing candles. We will refrain from further Mac/dessert jokes, other than to point out that you don’t need to (chocolate) log out to enjoy the integrated jam layer, and that the MacBook Cake can supply up to 6 gigabites of cReAM.
