Making It Cliq: Motorola’s New Cliq Touts Social Power 14 September 2009 at 5:25 pm by admin

Motorola has come out with a phone, the Cliq, targeted at a specific market and utilizing the power of Google’s Android platform. It is the first of a family of new Motorola phones, where the Cliq stands at the patronymic fore.

As far as features go, Cliq is doing all right. The phone is complete with a decent camera (5 megapixel), video capability, sweet media tools, a spacious allowance for microSD memory, voice-activated search features, and easy access to Google Maps (street view), Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Picasa, Gmail, Microsoft Exchange, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and all the rest. It comes with a (teeny) Qwerty keyboard, a thankfully accurate touchscreen, and an eye-catching titanium body.

But the way that those features are bundled is what makes the Motorola Cliq standout. It uses Motoblur, which is Motorola’s catchy name for a new cloud-based social-everything service. Motoblur tries to lasso everything social in someone’s life and put it into one snazzy portable format. According to one of Motorola’s marketing slogans, “You can stream your music, why not your friends?”

+ Motorola cancels RAZR3 / Ruby, era comes closer to an end By admin 29 November 2008 at 8:15 am and have No Comments

Earlier this month, the almighty RAZR fell from the top spot as America’s best selling handset. Now, we’re finding that the RAZR3 / Ruby has been canned. Granted, the move isn’t all that surprising — after all, Moto’s known for awhile now that it simply can’t keep tweaking the RAZR instead of, you know, innovating. But honestly, if this signals that the company is serious about moving forward and possibly adopting Android on the double, we won’t shed a tear. Okay, maybe one, but only after all the lights are out.

+ Motorola Alexander and Attila spotted, but not clearly By admin 28 November 2008 at 12:05 pm and have No Comments

This is really just confirmation of existence more than anything, given that we’ve already seen purported shots of both the Attila and Alexander before, but at least we’re assured that these forthcoming Motorola smartphones are more than just subjects of one’s Photoshopping escapades. The image you see above is accompanied by no additional information whatsoever, but we must say, these look strangely seductive in greyscale. Could these really be the first truly black-and-white handsets? Do it Moto, we dare you.

+ Motorola intros energy-saving D10, D11 digital cordless phones By admin 28 November 2008 at 8:02 am and have No Comments

They may not do something crazy like connect to the internet, but Motorola’s new D10 and D11 cordless phones do break some new ground in their own little way, with each boasting an eco mode that promises to automatically reduce power consumption based on how far the handsets are away from the base. To add a bit more green cred, Motorola also manufactured each of ‘em using a minimum of 20% recycled material. Otherwise, you can expect the usual backlit display, 100-number phonebook, and speakerphone functionality from each, with a bit of SMS messaging and three-way calling thrown in on the D11 model. No word on a price just yet, but both should be available by the end of the month — in the UK, at least.

+ Nikon outs D3x in own Pro magazine By admin 28 November 2008 at 7:08 am and have No Comments

Uh, oops. Sorry Nikon but your D3x is now even less of a mystery. According to your own Pro magazine, the D3x will sport an FX-format, 24.5 megapixel sensor shooting 5fps at full resolution or 7fps at a reduced 10 megapixels. Nikon made a few other tweaks including an extended ISO 50-6400 range but the body design, AF, metering, and main functions remain the same as the D3. The only thing we need now is a price and confirmed release date. Back to you Nikon. One more shot detailing the features after the break, full details beyond the read link.

+ Microsoft working on its own Tegra-powered superphone? Doubtful. By admin 26 November 2008 at 8:59 am and have No Comments

The popular rumor floating around at the moment is that Microsoft intends to announce self-branded handsets powered by NVIDIA’s beefy Tegra architecture for next-gen phones and MIDs at the GSMA’s Mobile World Congress in February of next year. Let’s put aside for a moment the fact that Redmond continues to vehemently deny having any interest in getting into the hardware end of its Windows Mobile racket — concealing the truth is a part of doing competitive business, after all — and turn our attention to the practical matter of whether this makes any sense whatsoever. First off, Windows Mobile’s strength lies in its incredibly deep and wide partner base, a base that includes visionary teams at HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, and countless others. With Android and Symbian finally becoming viable opportunities for third-party manufacturers, Microsoft doesn’t want to do anything that’s going to hasten the revolt before it’s able to wrap up version 7 (or at the very least, 6.5) — and competing with your own licensees would be a bang-up way to do that. Granted, Microsoft did exactly that by introducing Zune following the PlaysForSure initiative, but let’s be honest: Windows Mobile and Zune don’t play in the same league. Zune’s a hobby, a side gig; WinMo’s a monster, a long-term cash cow that’s got to be treated with the same franchise tag as Windows itself.

+ Live NFL broadcast to air in 3D as "proof of concept" By admin 24 November 2008 at 12:13 pm and have No Comments

As the NFL gobbles up even more market share in the United States, it follows logic to see the next big in-home entertainment push side with it in order to garner attention. With every company and its third subsidiary twice removed trying to shove 3D into the home, we’d say starting with the NFL is a brilliant move. In a closed-to-the-public “proof of concept” demonstration, next week’s matchup between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders will air live in 3D to select theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Boston. Third-dimension mainstays 3ality Digital and RealD will play critical roles in the delivery, though it remains unclear what exactly the NFL and 3D backers in general plan to do afterwards. If you’ll recall, this isn’t the first pro sporting event this year that was beamed in 3D to nearby theaters, but we can’t think of anything more appealing than 300-pound gentleman crushing each other just inches from your retinas.

[Thanks, Jesse]

+ HANNspree’s 28-inch 1080p HT09 LCD HDTV comes to America for $500 By admin 24 November 2008 at 11:40 am and have No Comments

Just in time for brands like Vizio, Panasonic, Sony and Sanyo to undercut it on Black Friday, HANNspree has swooped in and delivered its bedroom-sized 1080p LCD HDTV to the great lands of North America. The set, which was made available a few months prior in the UK, claims to be the planet’s first 28-inch “1080p” HDTV, with a native 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, two HDMI ports, a VGA socket, integrated ATSC / NTSC / Clear QAM tuner, 3-millisecond response time, 3,000:1 contrast ratio, stereo speakers (5-watts x 2), audio in / out ports and an Energy Star 3.0 sticker for good measure. Not too shabby for $499.99, and we’d count on finding it even cheaper given the current level of competition in the sector.
