gOS "Cloud" instant-on OS comes to Gigabyte touchscreen netbooks 01 December 2008 at 1:38 pm by admin

Not that we were too impressed with gOS when we first saw Rocket almost a year ago, but Cloud — the small footprint, quick boot Linux variant that Good OS introduced today at the Netbook World Summit in Paris — looks like an altogether different beast. Arriving pre-installed alongside Windows on the new Gigabyte touchscreen netbooks (perhaps some variant of the M912V), the new SplashTop-esque OS uses a web browser as its main interface, with an integrated dock providing such Web 2.0 mainstays as Skype, YouTube and the Google family of apps — and if this smattering of tools doesn’t meet all of your computing needs, you can always boot into your main OS from there. Cloud can be installed as a dual-boot partition on your hard drive or SSD as well as onto a flash chip hardwired onto a motherboard. That’s all we have for now, but you can bet we’ll be on hand to check it out at CES in January.

+ Mio said to be prepping GPS-enabled 3.5G touchscreen handset for Q1 2009 By admin 01 December 2008 at 1:05 pm and have No Comments

Not that Mio hasn’t pumped out a GPS phone or two before, but the rarely-heard-from handset maker is reportedly on its way to delivering its first 3.5G touchscreen-based GPS phone in Q1 2009. Undisclosed sources singled out at DigiTimes have it that the mobile will be powered by a 3.5G chipset from Qualcomm and will come loaded with Mitac’s self-developed “Spirit” touch interface. Additionally, it’ll pack a 3.2-megapixel camera and should launch ahead of Garmin’s oft-delayed nüvifone. In related news, Mio is also scheduled to launch a GPS-packin’ MID before Q1 2009 ends, though it’s still unclear if it’ll choose a 7- or 8-inch panel to accompany the 3G radio and Windows CE operating system. Riveting stuff, huh?

+ BenQ Joybook U101 launches, gives almost no joy By admin 01 December 2008 at 12:33 pm and have No Comments

The BenQ Joybook Lite U101 we spied back when it was announced in September has just launched, and though there’s nothing incredibly exciting here, we thought we’d give you a quick rundown, because we’re just cool like that. The U101 boasts completely standard netbook fair — an Atom N270 CPU, Intel 945GSE chipset, 1GB of DDR2 memory, with 80-160GB mechanical drives and 4-16GB SSD options. It’s also got a 16:9 display with a 1024 x 576 resolution (rare for a netbook), a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and three USB 2.0 ports. The sassy little number comes in blue, pink, white and black, and it can be yours for €398 ($503) in Taiwan right now, but we’ve got no word on when it will be available elsewhere. Dip this puppy in gold or something and then maybe, just maybe we’ll bite.

+ Asus releases brushed-aluminum Eee PC 1002HA By admin 01 December 2008 at 11:56 am and have No Comments

A brushed-aluminum chassis distinguishes the 1002HA from the rest of the Eee PC crowd.

Unveiled last month, Asus’ latest addition to its ever-expanding Netbook line is the Eee PC 1002HA. It’s your standard 10-inch Netbook–Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and Windows XP–but comes wrapped …

+ Nokia teases major new product launching tomorrow By admin 01 December 2008 at 11:56 am and have No Comments

Come on, you didn’t think Nokia’s only response to the G1, iPhone, and Storm would be the 5800 XpressMusic, did you? Word on the ground at this week’s Nokia World conference is that Espoo is planning a major announcement tomorrow — and hey, is that a countdown timer to the keynote that just went live on Nokia’s site? Interesting. Our pal and yours Robert Scoble says that Nokia execs are running around bragging that “the Internet” is totally in the dark on this one, and that only a small number of people within the company have seen the new device. That’s certainly got our ears perked up — we’re guessing this is something a little more major than that hinted-at touch Communicator. We’ll let you know right away if you want to stay up with us — the event is scheduled for 3:15AM EST.

+ FCC leaks tiny VAIO with WWAN — Sony’s first netbook? By admin 01 December 2008 at 8:28 am and have No Comments

They might not like it, but Sony looks ripe to enter the netbook market in the US. Unveiled today is the backside of this tiny “notebook PC” as described by the FCC under the model numbers PCG-1P1L and PCG-1P2L (PCG synonymous with Sony’s VAIO laptop brand). We see tests for Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and both EVDO and HSPA data courtesy of Qualcomm’s Gobi chipset. What’s more, with the FCC providing the exact measurement of that label (128-mm wide), we can eyeball dimensions at just over 9.5 x 4.5-inches making this netbook even smaller than the 10.3 x 6.56-inch HP mini 1000. What impact that has on the QWERTY and trackpad (if there is one) remains to be seen. Now please Sony, just announce, we were just about to pull the trigger when you spoiled our netbook purchasing party.

P.S. It runs Windows according to the label’s mention of the “Windows logo.”

+ Pixel Qi conjuring up black magic technology for 40-hour laptops By admin 29 November 2008 at 3:40 pm and have No Comments

Sure, you can go out and get yourself a laptop right now that’ll go 12.5-hours strong, but what if your portable computer could nearly outlast your Aigo A215? While L’s mythical quad core lappie came close in theory, Mary Lou Jepsen’s (the former CTO at OLPC) startup is hoping to eventually create a machine that can last between 20 and 40-hours between charges. Pixel Qi is being pretty closelipped right now (and understandably so) about what exactly it has going on, but we get the idea the secret sauce is in a highly efficient display that will require far less power than traditional LCDs. The best part? We could see one of these longevous notebooks in the pipeline as early as 2H 2009, so we’d probably start stocking up on Red Bull right about now.

+ Netbook’s Biggest Secrets Revealed:<br /> HP Mini 1000 does 3G By admin 24 November 2008 at 3:24 pm and have No Comments

The HP Mini 1000 Netbook has a 3G modem–who knew? Well, HP presumably and now the rest of us do, thanks to an enterprising Mini 1000 owner and forum poster at Pocketables.net. He or she (impossible to say with a name like dplxy) discovered a SIM card slot hiding …

HP Mini 1000 now supporting 3G

When we got comfy with the HP Mini 1000 last month, there was talk of a full 3G spec’d version coming in December. Lo and behold we’re not even out of November yet and one owner has managed to get online with his brand spankin’ new 1000. User dplxy over at the Pocketables forum put in some quality time with customer support from both HP and AT&T to figure out how, saving you some minutes by describing the how-to. Full instructions are at the read link, but the gist of it is you need to download a WWAN driver from HP, manually extract and install it, and then slot your SIM card into the battery compartment. Speeds are reported to be solid but, with the lowly three cell battery struggling to keep the thing broadcasting, you’d better hurry up and find what you’re looking for. It’s unlikely this will work with older versions of the Mini 1000, which are believed to lack the hardware internals, but give it a shot and let us know what you find, yeah?

+ Dell adds $100 32GB SSD option to Inspiron Mini 9 By admin 23 November 2008 at 7:34 pm and have No Comments

Sure, the base price of Dell’s Inspiron Mini 9 is pretty palatable, but good luck passing through that hard drive selection screen with this option unchecked. Yep, as now, Mini 9 buyers can opt for a capacious 32GB solid state drive (a luxury already available in Japan), which is a $100 upgrade over the standard 4GB SSD. Enticing enough to make you finally pull the trigger?

[Thanks, THAR]
