We never thought we’d live to see the day that digital photo frames had cooler phones than our parents. Actually, okay, that doesn’t surprise us at all — and T-Mobile’s helping us live out that reality with the Cameo, its Parrot-sourced frame that features integrated GSM hardware and a dedicated phone number that lets loved ones shoot pictures to it from afar via MMS or email. The rumored details have turned out to be spot-on, meaning that you’ll be paying $99.99 for the frame plus another $9.99 monthly to keep the line active. An exact launch date has yet to be revealed, it’ll be available at some point in mid-November.

USB Fever has a real eye-opening item on offer: the USB Digital Endoscope. While they claim this product is for “medical” uses, looking at it, it strikes us as an unlikely candidate for actual, legitimate endoscopy. Luckily, the seller offers a helpful slew of other suggested uses, including forensics, tinkering, industrial inspection, science education, serial number identification, unicorn hunting, and crime scene investigation. You can order it now for $139.99 and it’ll supposedly be shipped out the week of November 17th. Oh, and Mac users — go ahead and get indignant — this instrument is compatible only with Windows and Linux.

So apparently Apple knew what it was talking about after all. Research firm Canalys says that Apple stole the rug out from underneath RIM in the third quarter to become the world’s number two pusher of smartphones, taking a hearty 17.3 percent market share compared to RIM’s 15.2 percent and Windows Mobile’s 13.6 percent. For what it’s worth, the firm says RIM could very well bounce back in the fourth quarter with the Bold, Storm, and Pearl 8220 all ramping up in time for the holidays, but either way, number one platform Symbian needn’t sweat any time soon; Nokia’s baby managed to lose 21.5 percent share year over year, but they’re still sitting pretty with 46.6 percent.
How’d Apple manage to steal so much BlackBerry thunder (pun painfully intended)? Part of the evidence might lie in J.D. Power’s just-released 2008 Business Wireless Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study, revealing that suits adore their iPhones, like their BlackBerrys just alright, and despise their Palms. Amusing to us was the iPhone’s rating of a 5 out of 5 in the Features category — the only contender to get a perfect score there — despite the fact that virtually every other smartphone platform continues to outstrip it for raw capability. Usability, though, well… that’s arguably another story altogether.

Some stores have already let a few slip out the door a day early, but for those of us who haven’t left our parents’ basements since 1989, turns out there’s now a sweet alternative to heading down to the brick-and-mortar. The BlackBerry Bold’s now up on AT&T’s site ready to ship for $299.99 after rebate on a two-year contract, so go ahead and whip out the plastic. If you haven’t been using a Curve or an 8800 lately, prep your unsuspecting thumbs with some hardcore workouts — and if you have been using a Curve or an 8800, get those freakishly muscular, overbuilt digits out of our sights.

Time Magazine has released its annual Best Inventions issue, and topping the list is the 23andMe retail DNA test, a kit which which offers consumers 23 clinical reports on their genetic risk for everything from Psoriasis to Prostate Cancer. It may not be as well known as last year’s
iPhone (or YouTube the year before that), but the $399 package might signal a significant revolution in preventative medicine… or it might bring mankind a disturbing new form of eugenics. Whatever you use it for, the process couldn’t be easier: the kit comes with a tube that you spit in and mail back to the company, which in a mere 4 - 6 weeks will notify you that testing is complete. As you wait for the results to be posted online you might want to spend some time contemplating the ethical dilemmas posed by this technology.

There was a day during an age not far removed from our memory in which Apple would remain dead silent on any murmuring going on regarding its wares — clearly, that day has passed. In a rather unprecedented move, an actual spokesman named Bill Evans emerged from the Cupertino cocoon in order to put to rest all those wildly speculative rumors going on about new iMacs and / or Mac minis. Quite frankly, he uttered that “[Apple's] holiday line-up is set.” Our take? This move is likely being made in order to assure prospective holiday shoppers that buying now is “safe,” and that new gear isn’t just weeks / days / nanoseconds away. C’mon, you know a well-oiled machine like Apple doesn’t want all sorts of about-to-be-outdated Mac inventory clogging its supply chain when Macworld rolls around, don’tcha?

pimg src=”http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/10/kangaroomcarryingcase.jpg” width=”250″ height=”469″ / Now that I live in visiting distance from my parents, they tend to come over a lot and nag me about how messy everything is. Since most of the crap I have lying around is related to gaming, I should probably invest in this case from Kangaroom, whose a href=”http://gizmodo.com/5021284/lightning-review-kangaroom-bamboo-laptop-stand-and-charging-station”various/a a href=”http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/game-storage/kangarooms-stackable-console-storage-holds-games-consoles-311522.php”organizing/a a href=”http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/kangaroom-power-strip-organizer-hides-your-shame-246597.php”solutions/a we’ve covered a couple times before. The Gamer Pocket and Carrying Case drapes over any sofa arm and holds up to 8 Wii controllers or nunchucks, 8 games, and other accessories. If you want to take it on the go, flip it over and it turns into a mobile carrying case. Costs $30 off the website. pimg src=”http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/10/dsi_close.gif” style=”display:block;” / Games that already play well with the DS could run into trouble on the DSi, causing many a developer headache, according to sources at Pocket Gamer. One unnamed developer told the publication that its studio is having problems getting one of its upcoming games compatible with the Dsi’s new hardware. Though the game plays fine on the regular DS, it freezes up when played on the Dsi and so Nintendo won’t certify it./p pNintendo’s response to everything has been that “All DS titles are compatible with Dsi” (except those that utilize the GBA slot—like Guitar Hero). But if games that haven’t been released are already running into trouble, does that mean that several games already out there won’t play nice on the company’s next handheld?
