Sony, Olympus SLRs await Adobe camera profiles 25 November 2008 at 7:48 pm by admin

I’m a big fan of Adobe Systems’ camera profiles, which when editing the raw images that higher-end cameras can produce imbues photos with what I find to be more natural hues. So I was glad to hear camera profiles are moving out of Adobe Labs and into Photoshop and Lightroom.

+ Dell’s Mini 12 now available to order, should ship sometime in December By admin 13 November 2008 at 12:05 pm and have No Comments

We’ve been following the tale of Dell’s quasi-Netbook, the Mini 12, for some time now — from its first behind-closed-doors appearance over the Summer to the official late-October announcement, with actual availability and price TBA, as they say.

Dell was closed-mouthed as recently as a few days ago …

While I still love my iPhone 3G, we’ve hit some bumps in the road in our relationship. In particular its battery life, or lack thereof, depending on what I’m using it for.

I recall one instance in particular. After using the phone more than I usually …

+ The Google Switch: the story behind one of the greatest fakes of all time By admin 13 November 2008 at 5:22 am and have No Comments

Filed under:

It’s not the quality of the Photoshop that made the Google Switch one of the great product fakes of all time. In fact, it was questionable enough that we asked the tipster for more detail and a second picture before publishing, and only then did we do so with skepticism. Still, once it was out, it gained so much traction in the Google-crazed Kingdom of Nerd that its image quickly became synonymous with the Googlephone — the sweaty-palmed rumor circulating back in late 2006. When it became clear that the HTC Dream was to become the Googlephone, many editors and readers alike were left wondering about the Google Switch. After all, the rumor had never been properly debunked. Turns out that the Switch was the idea of three ordinary Dutch students — Egbert Veenstra, Sytse-Jan Kooistra and Sam Baas — who had already rendered the finger-touch phone-concept in late 2006. Miffed upon seeing the iPhone unveiled with many of the ideas they felt were theirs, the trio decided to generate some buzz for their idea and hooked it to the rumor du jour: the googlephone. That’s when they contacted us. In retrospect, it’s amazing how much they got right… or perhaps, how well Google and HTC listened. Hit the read link for their full story.

Indecent Exposure,
Let me first say, I love your podcast, I have been listening since the first episode.
I have a question I was hoping you might be able to help me with. I have a Nikon N80 35mm camera that I love, except for the developing of the film part. My wife and I have an inexpensive point a shoot digital camera which works, but I miss my N80.

So I have been looking at getting a DSLR, I plan on staying Nikon so I don’t have to replace my Lenses. I have been looking mostly at the D80 which has come down a lot in price since the D90 came out. But with the economy the way it has been lately, I have not dared to pull the trigger on the purchase.

Recently I saw a used listing for a D100 that caught my eye. I have seen a lot of D100 (body only) selling for between $100 - $200. From the reviews I have read, it looks like the D100 is just a digital version of my old N80. Also, from what I can tell there is not a lot of major differences between the old D100 and the current D80 in the basic spec besides, 6.1 - 10.2 megapixels, CF vs. SD memory, 1.8" vs. 2.5" display.

Do you know of anything else that is different that I am missing?

What do you think of purchasing a D100 vs. a D80?

Do you think this would be a good inexpensive way for me to get a DSLR.

Thanks for any advice you can give.
–Jonathan

+ We Have an ePaper Challenger! (And Its Name is LCD) [Sharp] By admin 30 October 2008 at 1:50 pm and have No Comments

pimg src=”http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/10/sharp4B.jpg” align=”left” hspace=”4″ vspace=”2″ style=”display:block;” /Sharp may not do much in terms of ePaper, but they know their way around an LCD. And they’ve just shown off a new type of eight-color LCD that can hold a static image emeven when the power is cut/em./p pThe 14.1, 6.1, 2.4 and 1.7-inch displays are believe to use a cholesteric LCD material to freeze the images. Power specifications were not provided, but freezing data into the display apparently takes a “relatively large” amount of energy./p pAnd while Sharp hasn’t pitched the tech for displaying the newspaper, they do see a lot of potential in the commercial market. One Osaka grocery is already testing several smaller displays that are hooked up to Wi-Fi and can change prices easily. The same principle would work well for nightly restaurant specials and the ever-fluctuating pricepoints at children’s lemonade stands everywhere.
