Samsung’s YP-P3 becomes a reality — thanks, FCC 28 November 2008 at 2:03 am by admin

Well, what do you know? That Samsung YP-P3, which was rumored back in May, is more than just a figment of someone’s vivid imagination. Thanks to the wonderful FCC, we now know that Sammy is pressing for approval to release its next-generation PMP here in the States, though that’s absolutely all that we know right now. There’s no attached user manual, no splendid internal / external photos and no other juicy details to pore over. But let’s focus on the positive, shall we? The P3 is for real, and it’s coming soon.

Pasen is dead, long live Pasen's new REI-16 PMP

To say that we’ve been underwhelmed by Pasen’s offerings thus far would be like calling the Meizu M8 slightly delayed, but supposedly we’re in for a pleasant surprise when next we meet a player from the company. The brand has been bought out by Italian Kiwii LTD and is pledging that those awful interfaces and stolen icons are things of the past. The proof will be in the REI-16 PMP, pictured above serving as a precarious looking wheel chock. It should make for a better media player, and while details are few it’s said to offer a “gorgeous” 3-inch touchscreen, “sexy” user interface, and support “tons” of audio and video formats (including ogg). An integrated FM transmitter will pipe tunes to your car, plus there’s video output for your TV and even emulation for 8-bit console games. It certainly sounds promising, but we’ll have wait for the full specs and some hands-on impressions before we can call Pasen reborn or just rebranded.

+ Logic3 intros i-Station Rotate iPod / iPhone dock By admin 17 November 2008 at 1:22 pm and have No Comments

It sure is tough for iPod docks to stand out from the pack these days, but it looks like Logic3 has found one fairly unique way to get its new i-Station Rotate unit noticed, with it packing a rotating mechanism that will let you adjust your iPod or iPhone to suit your screen format. Other than that, it looks to be a fairly standard speaker dock, with it boasting a whopping 10W of total output power, a video output for some larger screen viewing, a 3.5mm line-in jack to accommodate your non-Apple devices, a remote control, and accommodations for four AA batteries to let you take it on the road. You won’t be able to get your hands on this one until January, however, when it’ll set you back $130.

+ Monocular San Francisco artist wants webcam installed in her prosthetic eye By admin 17 November 2008 at 12:57 pm and have No Comments

Tanya Vlach, a San Francisco-based artist, lost her eye in a 2005 car accident, and now keeps a blog chronicling the “monocular life.” She’s got a real-enough looking prosthetic peeper, but Tanya’s a self-described “sci-fi geek,” and, with the approval of her doctor, she’s put out a call for engineers to build her a camera… for her fake eye. Likening her possible future self (the one with the eye-cam installed) to a cyborg, Tanya reasons that her aesthetic-only eye could become a source of “augmented reality,” and she’s got a list of possible specs up on her blog for would-be engineers to begin with. Just some of the things mentioned for inclusion are: DVR capabilities, MPEG-4 compression, a microSD slot, A/V out, and Bluetooth. In other words, Tanya Vlach is insanely cool. Emphasis on the insanely part.

+ SuperSpeed USB 3.0 spec officially released, first chipset demonstrated By admin 17 November 2008 at 12:28 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

It’s been nearly a year since we first saw the USB 3.0 connector make an appearance at CES, and after months of corporate infighting, spec-polishing, and technical navel-gazing, the future of consumer peripheral connectivity is here — in the form of complete specifications and a demo. Yeah, so maybe SuperSpeed USB isn’t making the most dramatic entrance ever, but hey, it doesn’t have to with 4.8Gbps transfer speeds, improved power management, and backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 along for the ride. As expected, the first wave of devices won’t hit until 2010, but Symwave’s giving attendees of this week’s SuperSpeed conference a taste of tomorrow with a demo of the Quasar USB 3.0 chipset, which is targeted at “sync-and-go” devices like phones and media players. Sounds lovely — now if you’ll excuse us, we have to go back to mourning the death of FireWire 400.

+ 3M’s MPro110 pico projector hits the streets for $359 a pop By admin 12 November 2008 at 10:18 am and have No Comments

With the holidays at hand, all these improbably-small projectors we’ve been seeing around for the past year or so are starting to land in force, and 3M’s MPro110 is certainly a contender. The little unit shoots a VGA image onto screens as large as 50-inches (though we wouldn’t recommend it), with a long lasting LED backlight backing it up. We got an up-close look at the thing last night, and have a few quick notes: the image is about as dim as you’d expect, and looks exponentially better the smaller the area you’re trying to project on — at about 30-inches in a decently lit room the image was insufferably dim, but at around 17 or 18-inches we were getting some pretty good definition brightness. The projector autofocuses plenty fast, which is clutch for a “handheld” projector, but it does get fairly warm despite its LED usage. Overall, we can’t fault the projector too much, with a $359 pricetag and a “paperback book” form factor, but the application is certainly limited at the moment, and we’re guessing these will be getting a lot better in the future. The MPro110 is now shipping.

+ Meizu’s M8 ready to rock the US and Europe on an iPhone tribute tour? By admin 05 November 2008 at 2:32 am and have No Comments

Feel those little hairs standing up on the back your neck? That’s guarded anticipation son, the kind that comes from a Chinesed iPhone landing Stateside with the impact of a giant set of balls. According to yet another launch-related post in the Meizu forums, Jack Wong has accelerated plans to kick his M8 cellphone into India and China (WiFi-less to meet local restrictions) by November 30th. Then “maybe” he’ll launch in the US, Hong Kong, and Europe by December 24th. Oh sure. Our take? There’s no way in hell that this highest of high-profile clones lands Stateside or on Western European soil without being met by a friendly Apple lawyer holding a court-issued ban on all M8 imports. No matter how much we’re dying to play with it.

+ Sony turns CDs blue with new Blu-spec CD standard By admin 05 November 2008 at 12:54 am and have No Comments

Got a good marketing hook? Great, give it a nice thick slather across some related bits of your consumer electronics and prepare to rake in the cash. With MD and SACD formats not exactly dominating the audio masses, Sony’s back with a new format by the name Blu-spec CD. It takes advantage of (you guessed it) Sony’s Blu-ray Disc technology to press new high-quality discs while somehow maintaining compatibility with regular ol’ red-laser CD players. How? No idea, really — it’s some kind of secret, proprietary Sony magic hidden deep inside of Google’s Japanese-to-English language translator. Perhaps an English press release will be issued later in the day. It does seem that Sony will kick out about 60 Blu-spec CD classics (Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue for example) in December ranging in prices from ¥2,500 (about $25) to ¥4,200 ($42). Ouch.

+ Philips reveals Bluetooth-enabled GoGear LUXE DAP By admin 25 October 2008 at 1:20 pm and have No Comments

Philips’ GoGear line hasn’t exactly sent us into uncontrollable fits of jubilation of late, but the latest DAP to fall under the aforesaid umbrella doesn’t look half bad. Boasting a prism-like motif and integrated Bluetooth 2.1 functionality, this unit will actually pause your tunes and allow you to answer a call if your BT-enabled phone is nearby and paired up. It also features 10-hours of playback time and 100-hours in standby, and there’s an FM tuner included in case you roll through 2GB of jams and just can’t bear to hear any of them again. Word on the street has it that this bugger will surface in Singapore next month for around S$139 ($92), though other Asian countries should see it pop up shortly thereafter.

+ AWIND’s MobiShow video and PowerPoint cellphone streamer By admin 20 October 2008 at 3:54 am and have No Comments

Although unveiled back at DEMO last month, we thought AWIND’s MobiShow was worthy of the double-back. The compact, WiFi presentation device allows for video and PowerPoint demonstrations to be presented in a 1,024 x 768 pixel resolution on any VGA-connected display without the need for a PC — everything is controlled from the Windows Mobile or iPhone handset applications. Check the video after the break, the acting alone should make it worth your while.
