+ A Netbook that can handle games? We test the Asus N10J By admin 30 November 2008 at 8:35 pm and have No Comments

We may think of Atom-powered Netbooks as the most basic of computers, good for Web surfing and e-mailing - but what would happen if someone stuffed a discrete graphics chip into one of these low-power, low-price systems?

It took Asus, the guys who pretty much created the Netbook market with …

+ Energy Sistem rolls out 4040 Touch PMP By admin 28 November 2008 at 4:46 pm and have No Comments

As far as PMPs off the beaten path go, Energy Sistem’s always seem to be a slight cut above the rest, and it’s new 4040 Touch looks to be no exception, with it packing some reasonably high-end features into a bargain-priced but not too cheap-looking package. That includes a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen, 16GB of storage, a microSD card slot for further expansion, a built-in microphone, an FM tuner, support for most of the usual audio and video formats, and even support for Microsoft’s PlayFX, all for a fairly reasonable €120, or about $150. If that’s more than you need, the company apparently also recently rolled out its 5020 and 5021 models, which drop the touchscreen and cut the storage down to 4GB, and the price down to €85, or just over $100. Just don’t be too surprised if they wind up looking slightly less polished that Energy Sistem’s photos.

+ Black Friday Giveaways (part 4): Archos 5 and DVR Station By admin 28 November 2008 at 4:15 pm and have No Comments

Now come on, this is some seriously sweet stuff. The multi-function Archos 5 (now with updated firmware which the company says addresses a handful of issues we had) is a choice deal unto itself, but toss in that DVR Station, and we think it’s clear just how serious we are about holiday cheer. If you don’t throw your hat in the ring for this one, you may just be faking a love of gadgets. Want to make this happen? Here’s how it works.

We’ll put up a gadget on the site, and you can only enter it until the next gadget lands (usually within a couple of hours). If you miss your shot, sorry, we’re moving on to the next gadget. Good luck! Oh, and don’t forget the rules. (Yeah, there are always rules.)

  • Leave a comment below. That’s it! Who loves you, baby.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) You can enter different giveaways in today’s Black Friday giveaways, but you can only enter this one once.
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers or US contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winners will be chosen randomly.
  • Entries can be submitted until the next contest goes up. After that we’re all done. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

Last round’s winner: Curt! (Remember, winners are selected at random.)

+ Fujitsu-Siemens offers Lifebook4Life laptop replacement warranty, has some land in Florida it would like to sell you By admin 28 November 2008 at 1:36 pm and have No Comments

Fujistu-Siemens in the UK has recently announced their Lifebooks4Life program, which at first sounds a bit like some sort of gang tattoo, but turns out to be a new program that entitles you to a new laptop of the same value (adjusted 10 percent for inflation) every three years for the rest of your life. Granted, you’ll be obliged to purchase a three year warranty with each new machine, and the machine must remain in warranty (you know what that means — no cheap, off-brand RAM upgrades and absolutely no mods). But still — a new notebook every three years for the price of a warranty? This doesn’t sound like a disaster waiting to happen. Not at all. And one more caveat: you can’t pass this contract on to your next of kin. Those of you in high-risk professions — Dare Devils, Soldiers of Fortune, and contributing editors at Engadget — might want to pass this one up.

+ Doorbusting at Long Island Walmart leads to worker’s death By admin 28 November 2008 at 1:05 pm and have No Comments

Remember that completely insane crime wave that hit when Sony’s hotly anticipated PlayStation 3 finally rushed onto the scene in very limited numbers? Yeah, well that side of humanity is rearing its ugly head again, as an employee perished when legions of crazed Black Friday shoppers blazed through the doors of a Long Island Walmart. The worker was an overnight store clerk who was simply trying to hold back the crowds before the doors officially opened at 5:00AM. According to Jimmy Overby, another employee at the store: “They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me.” Words to the wise: either do your Black Friday shopping from the safety of your own home, or be careful, cool, calm and collected when you venture out.

+ Vizio hacks prices on select HDTVs prior to Black Friday By admin 26 November 2008 at 7:03 pm and have No Comments

We’ve already seen that a number of retailers will be offering Vizio HDTVs on the cheap this Friday (or Black Friday, as the in-crowd calls it these days), but the company is stealing a bit of their thunder by announcing cuts from the top a few days early. Vizio’s 19-inch VA19 LCD will be offered for just $199.99 at Costco through December 7th, while the 32-inch VP322 plasma (pictured) will go for $437 at Walmart starting today. There’s also the 37-inch VW37 LCD HDTV for $499.99 at Costco, the 32-inch 1080p VOJ32LF LCD for $559.99 at Sears and the 42-inch 1080p VS420 for $698 at Sam’s Club. If none of these sets float your boat, check out our condensed guide to Black Friday: HD style for something more to your liking.

+ Ask Engadget: Best DSLR for a committed amateur? By admin 20 November 2008 at 10:45 pm and have No Comments

With the holiday season fast approaching, there’s nothing that warms the heart like giving a gift with no expectation of anything in return. It’s with that spirit that we pass along Dylan’s incredibly important question:

“I’ve been nagging myself to get into digital photography and with Christmas coming soon I’ve decided to get a DSLR so I can dive in. I’m leaning heavily toward the Sony Alpha 350. I’ve always been a big Sony fan but I can back off of that if someone gives me good reason to try Nikon, Canon, etc. I would like to hang around the price range of the Alpha 350; ultimately, I’m looking for a good camera for a newcomer to the scene but I don’t want to have to upgrade soon.”

We hear ya Dylan, and our dutiful readers do too. (Right? Right.) After giving this one a response, feel free to send in your own inquiry to ask at engadget dawt com.
