T-Mobile G1 up and running with no activation 23 October 2008 at 4:44 pm by admin

Filed under:

It looks like getting up and running on an unactivated G1 is going to be a little easier than Apple made it for iPhone users. No jailbreak required. All you really need to do is beg, steal or borrow an active T-Mobile SIM card and slip it in the phone for the duration of the setup process (it should only take a few minutes). Once you’ve enabled WiFi you can go back to your old SIM: you’re ready to browse the web, run your apps and do everything you expect your Android-powered phone to do (except talk on the phone). If you’d like to get in on this action, check out the read link for the step-by-step instructions.

+ BenQ Joybook R46 arrives in China, Thailand and Malaysia By admin 22 October 2008 at 4:23 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

The last time we saw some new Joybooks they were these cute little 10.1-inch things, but the new R46 is their professional-minded older sibling (the Alex P. Keaton to your Mallory, perhaps). This sober, serious machine sports a 14.1-inch “UltraVivid” WXGA display, a Core 2 Duo T3400 processor, integrated x4500 graphics, up to 4GB RAM, up to 320GB storage and all the love that WiFi and Bluetooth provide. And if video conferencing is your bag, you’ll be please to note that it comes with a 2 megapixel webcam and microphone with smart noise suppression. Available now in China, Thailand and Malaysia — but the price remains a mystery.

+ fit-PC slim: very small, otherwise no great shakes By admin 21 October 2008 at 11:38 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

Remember the fit-PC slim we told you about last month? The folk at Extreme Tech have just had a sit down with the little bugger and found a very small machine that’s really only noteworthy for its size. Of course, that alone is impressive: at 4.3 x 3.9 x 1.2 inches it’s some 40% smaller than the original fit-PC, yet somehow it makes room for twice the memory (512MB) of its predecessor, WiFi (optional) three USB ports and VGA. But unless you really, really prize the miniscule form factor, you may just want to give this one a pass. According to the review, the device performs pretty much as you’d expect from a 512MB Windows XP machine (the 500MHz AMD Geode has no real problems running Firefox or OpenOffice, but larger apps are going to give you some grief) and some of you might not appreciate the lack of SATA and digital display support. Still curious? Hit the read link for the full review.

+ Next-gen Prius semi-officially leaks out: yep, looks like a shoe By admin 19 October 2008 at 2:09 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

We thought we had a handle on what the next-gen Prius was going to look like when we spotted those renders back in July, and Toyota’s just confirmed that some press shots that leaked out last week are the real deal, not just photos of a super-high-tech sneaker. The company isn’t providing any more information until the official debut at January’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but we’re hoping we’ll get some more details about those plug-in fleet tests, as well as those solar plans. Check a few more shots at links below.

+ Eee PC turns one year old, slides under the $300 barrier to celebrate By admin 16 October 2008 at 7:58 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

You wouldn’t know it by the vast array of spin-offs and iterations, but the Eee PC has only just now turned one year old and, whether by coincidence or design, it’s also now finally dropped under the ever-elusive $300 mark. That doesn’t come in the form of that rumored new sub-$300 model, however, but rather an existing Eee PC 900A that’s now available from Best Buy for $299.99. Not that we’re complaining, as this particular model packs an 8.9-inch display compared to the 7-incher on the 701SDX spotted yesterday, along with a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB or RAM, a 4GB SSD, and Linux pre-installed. Now, about that $200 Eee PC.

+ Elmo Live! gets stripped of his dignity, red fur By admin 16 October 2008 at 6:09 pm and have No Comments

Filed under:

Heads-up: this post contains graphics unsuitable for viewing by not-yet-hardened 6 year olds. Now that you’ve read that (and hopefully shielded your youngin’s innocent eyes from the image above), we’re here to tell you that the unspeakable (though inevitable) has occurred. Yes, friends, dear Elmo Live!, which probably won’t be seen selling for MSRP until January of 2009, has been splayed. Torn down. Stripped of every ounce of animality he had. All so that you could see what really makes this bizarre critter tick. You can tap the read link for more, but trust us, the worst is already staring you in the face.

+ FCC chairman wants to fill white spaces with broadband By admin 16 October 2008 at 4:32 am and have No Comments

Filed under:

Good news, folks — Kevin Martin believes that more mobile broadband is good for this nation. And we’re all about getting the WiFi to the people. Just as expected, the FCC chairman has voiced his support for using vacant airwaves from the looming 2009 digital TV transition to bring mobile broadband to more areas. According to Martin: “No one should ever underestimate the potential that new technologies and innovations may bring to society.” His proposal was issued ahead of an official report asserting that potential interference with existing infrastructure could be avoided if “technical safeguards” were put in place to prevent it. Sounds good from here, now go ‘head with your bad self, Mr. Martin.

+ Ben Heck apprentice strikes again with DarthCast By admin 15 October 2008 at 5:51 pm and have No Comments

Look out Ben Heck, you don’t want to be overcome by one of your own followers, now do you? Merely months after the clearly talented hailrazer churned out a mighty impressive portable Nintendo 64, the guy has done it again by creating an on-the-go Dreamcast — using the same style of Lazer Doodle shell, to boot. After acquiring another chassis, a Dreamcast, a Quantam controller, PSOne LCD, power supply and some serious battery power, the DarthCast was created. Reportedly, the thing can go for around three hours before puckering out, and you’ll know your time is short when it starts sighing heavily in a muffled tone. Check the vid after the break, and pay your respects in the read link, son.

+ Samsung & LG HDTV prototypes battle for supremacy By admin 15 October 2008 at 4:04 pm and have No Comments

Samsung and LG are locked in a tight race for “best HDTV you won’t be buying this year or next” this week at the International Meeting on Information Display 2008, trading shots with OLEDs, LCDs and more. Samsung brought along an upgraded version of its true 240Hz 15-inch Blue Phase LCD panel with improved image quality, some fresh carbon nanotube-based color electronic paper, plus slimmed-down versions of its 40- and 50-inch LCDs. Then it got busy with the OLEDs, dropping in a 14-inch HD display, 31-inch 1080p display and 5-inch VGA panel, to which LG could only respond with the above 19-inch OLED powered by amorphous silicon TFT. More stills of the carnage exist beyond the read link, but in the battle of display tech streeting in 2011 at the earliest, we just hope LG is holding back a few surprises for CES.
