Samsung Shows Off Giant 40-inch OLED HDTV [Televisions] 30 October 2008 at 9:51 am by admin

pimg src=”http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/10/5A_01.JPG” align=”left” hspace=”4″ vspace=”2″ style=”display:block;” /Way back in 2005, Samsung emtechnically/em showed off a 40-inch OLED screen. We didn’t want to be rude and say anything at the time, but it wasn’t sporting HD resolution and the contrast ratio was a measly 5,000:1. Now Samsung is showing off their new 40-inch OLED (that’s a mere 8.9mm thick), and needless to say, its specs are more than a little worth our attention./p pimg src=”http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/10/5B_01.JPG” class=”center” style=”display:block;” /The prototype runs at a full 1080p resolution and features an overkill contrast of 1,000,000:1. (Most scientists will tell you that the eye cannot distinguish such contrast, but marketers will disagree.)/p pIts color gamut is 107% of the NTSC standard and it features a luminance of 200cd/m2 (peaking at 600cd/m2)./p pUnfortunately, Samsung is quick to explain that their main assembly lines are not equipped to produce OLED screens beyond 31 inches (earlier roadmaps a href=”http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/oled-tv/samsung-oled-product-roadmap-shows-40+inch-tvs-in-2010-316353.php”slated 40 inchers for 2010/a). Nevertheless, our home theater system is suddenly feeling extremely inadequate. + Philips 3D Autostereoscopic TV Requires No Glasses, Is Gentle On The Eyes [3D Technology] By admin 01 October 2008 at 8:00 pm and have No Comments

Philips unveiled their 56-inch 3D display yesterday that packs a Quad Full HD resolution (3840×2160). Wired says the autostereoscopic display requires no glasses and is able to support such a high resolution because of its high data throughput rates. Those high rates also allow for a 3D effect that is high contrast, silky smooth and has a viewing angle of 160 degrees. Early word is that these displays will cost upwards of $25000, and will mostly exist in the commercial space. [Wired]

+ The 100-inch Rear Projection Television Upgrade [DIY] By admin 29 September 2008 at 5:10 pm and have No Comments

Owning a honking rear projection TV is an ever-increasing WASP social stigma, that is, unless it’s so freaking huge that neighbors admire it with the same jealous-of-waste gleam in their eye as your original Hummer. One modder takes us step by step through how he removed the screen of his “big screen” TV and swapped it with a 100-inch replacement. The end result is successful, even if his craftsmanship is a bit wobbly around the edges. But the catch? It looks like it now runs at lights-off brightness levels. You know, like a cheap projector or something… [BonMul via HackaDay]
