G1’s browser getting hijacked like a cab in Liberty City? 24 November 2008 at 7:17 pm by admin

There’s already been a G1 firmware pushed out to patch up a browser security issue, but you know how it goes with those — two flaws seem to magically sprout up in place of every one that’s snuffed out. It’s unclear exactly what’s going on here, but some G1 users are reporting that attempting to visit Yahoo!’s home page is intermittently redirecting them to a totally legit-looking page imploring them to download some bogus Microsoft AntiSpyware crap — and while we’re thinking that this fake site was intended to target slightly larger computers of the Windows variety, it’s disturbing that this redirect somehow managed to filter down to Android. It could be a DNS hack or a problem with T-Mobile’s proxies, in which case the G1’s own defenses are absolved for the time being, but that’s not much comfort for Joe Yahoo-User, now is it?

+ Dash Express Kills Its GPS Devices By admin 03 November 2008 at 2:24 pm and have No Comments

Dash_2
Personal navigation devices maker, Dash, is killing its GPS devices.

It will shift its focus from selling hardware-based GPS systems to just licensing its applications and services to run on other products.

Dash, which competes with Garmin and TomTom among others, launched its GPS device just earlier this year.

Dash started selling its products through its website for $400 in April. But its end seems to have come even before it could make it to its first holiday season.

The company says it will now focus on licensing to onboard navigation system makers, smartphones, PDAs, mobile internet devices and other consumer electronics.

"From a navigation perspective, adding a GPS chip or connectivity is only a small part of the equation," said Rob Currie, CEO of Dash Navigation in a statement. "Delivering a connected service that provides daily consumer value and ensuring that the back-end infrastructure is in place to support it is very
complicated." And that’s where Dash says it will like to play in the future.

Unlike many of its competitors Dash offered two-way traffic information through a connected system of other Dash devices on the road. The device also allowed users to search for restaurants and other services through a partnership with Yahoo!

But in a competitive market facing larger rivals and strong price pressures, Dash never really found its footing, despite its innovative technology.

With its new strategy, the company may have found the only way to stay alive.

There have also been layoffs. Dash "eliminated" positions non-essential to supporting existing subscribers or driving new licensing
partnerships," it said.

"Given the
current economic environment, we believe that the greatest opportunities lie in
integrating our service into the broad array of connected devices on the market," said Currie.

+ America’s CTO does infomercial for Obama [Eric Schmidt] By admin 31 October 2008 at 5:40 pm and have No Comments

Note how Schmidt explains his decision, made only after Obama took a substantial lead in the polls: “When I read his economic plan strongand saw the people endorsing it/strong, Warren Buffett, I thought, ‘This is the right plan for America.’” In other words, Schmidt didn’t endorse Obama until he saw it was popular with the right people, and might help Google get its search deal with Yahoo passed under an Obama administration. Brave! We still don’t think you’ll get that government job, Eric./p br style=”clear: both;”/

+ Facebook’s ad targeting badly misses the mark [Breakdowns] By admin 31 October 2008 at 1:40 pm and have No Comments

How passé! Facebook’s targeted ads, which draw on the personal information users enter into their profiles, are clearly the future, right? If only the company’s engineers could competently write the code that targets those ads. A Facebook advertiser who has spent thousands of dollars on campaigns targeted by age and country says that the site’s new reporting tools for advertisers have exposed a serious problem: Either the targeting routines are broken, or the reporting is completely off. An ad meant for U.K. teens went mostly to the U.S. and other European countries instead. A campaign meant to be placed in front of Irish users saw 1 in 14 ads go elsewhere. It’s a poor reflection on Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, whose expertise in running Google’s automated ad systems was touted as her main qualification for the job. Here are screenshots of some of the advertisers’ reports:/p pimg src=”http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/valleywag/2008/10/facebookchart1.png” class=”center” width=”477″ height=”194″ style=”display:block;float:none;” //p pimg src=”http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/valleywag/2008/10/facebookchart2.png” class=”center” width=”472″ height=”286″ style=”display:block;float:none;” //p pimg src=”http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/valleywag/2008/10/facebookchart3.png” class=”center” width=”472″ height=”195″ style=”display:block;float:none;” //p br style=”clear: both;”/
